Doug Stener: Wisconsin Mustang

Doug Stener: Wisconsin Mustang

This horse is a wild Mustang that was adopted by a family in Newville, WI. Doug Stener is a photographer  from Janesville, WI. If you would like to see more of his terrific photographs, you can contact him at placesandthings1213  at yahoo.com. I originally posted this photo in July 2011. I will always be grateful that Doug Stener and our mutual friend (Mary Mosca)  brought me this image (and other great photos) and let me share them,  especially when this site … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Laura Rodley “To Be a Horse”

03/31/2015 By Ellen Beals 1 Comment

This essay by Massachusetts writer Laura Rodley gives us an image and rides with it.  Reading it makes me think of all the horses in literature and the horse books by Marguerite Henry. I love how Laura’s writing flows (it's why I fell for "Addicted" in Solace in So Many Words).  This lyric essay is timely to me too because it mentions a broken arm, and I am recovering from a broken arm (but not one as serious the  fracture mentioned here).     To Be a … [Read more...]

News and nifty

"Keep your sunny side up, up!" ("Hide the side that gets blue"). I write this to myself as well as to you. No whining. I’ve been watching Foyle’s War on Netflix and really enjoying it. It’s been making me think of the sacrifices made at that time (1940s), wondering whether modern society could soldier on so. Here’s news I know. First off, big congrats to Ellen Bass … [Read more...]

Guest Post: “One More Thing” by Lesléa Newman

“One More Thing,” this wonderful poem by Lesléa Newman, seemed to me to segue very well from the last guest post, “Smoking” by Laura Rodley. On first reading this poem made me think of the past.  Subsequent readings made me think of the present.  I know it will make you think too. Thanks again to Lesléa Newman for letting me share her work here.   ONE MORE THING   My mother crept downstairs at night, (I made believe I was asleep) She didn’t … [Read more...]
