Happy coincidences and hearty congrats

08/12/2011 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Just the other day, the contributor of two poems to Solace in So Many Words was named U.S. Poet Laureate.  Of course it should come as no surprise as that contributor is none other than Philip Levine. But what a happy coincidence — I am so proud to say that the nation’s top poet is in Solace in So Many Words!

Now another happy coincidence has occurred, and that is that Joan Corwin who wrote “Details” has just won the Pearl‘s 2010 Short Story Prize for her story “Gone Missing.” Editor Marilyn Johnson describes Joan’s work, “In this masterful, beautifully written story, strange things begin to happen to a soon-to-be bride amidst preparations for her wedding day  As the story progresses, pieces of her wedding dress begin to disappear, one by one, and the implications subtly shift and go deeper, taking on a ghostly, psychological quality that can only be described as ‘Jamesian.’ This haunting love story, as lyrical as it is mysterious, will linger on in memeory long after reading it. . . .”

That Pearl picked Joan’s story is no surprise. Anyone familiar with Joan’s work or her biography will know that her writing has won several prizes (and deservedly so).  I am proud that Solace in So Many Words showcases Joan’s talent. The happy coincidence here is that Pearl is out of Long Beach, CA, and that is also the site for our first Cali event!  We will be reading September 6 at Gatsby Books at 7 pm.  On hand will be Patti Wojcik Wahlberg, Lisa Liken, Teresa S. Mathes, Donna Hilbert, me and Joan Corwin! So we are hoping that Pearl readers will be Solace in So Many Words readers too.

The coincidence doesn’t end there because Joan isn’t the only contributor to Solace in So Many Words whose work has also appeared in Pearl. Donna Hilbert, Patti Wojcik Wahlberg, Lisa Liken, Dennis Saleh and Jan Bottiglieri have all been published in its pages.

We look forward to meeting some Pearl readers in Long Beach!
