Biding my time, resolving to resolve

06/19/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Howdy. Ready for the longest day of the year? A couple weeks ago I read my horoscope and it said that after Mercury finished being in retrograde, I will receive good news on the 19th—so today’s a big day for me. I’ll keep you posted.

I was happy to hear that Kevin Nance, who has contributed photos to Glimpse of Solace, is having a show of his photography this Friday in Lexington, Kentucky.  I bet you’ve read articles by Kevin Nance – his byline appears in the pages of Poets & Writers, Chicago Tribune and many other publications. The tables were turned, so to speak, as Kevin is the subject of a feature article, “Former Herald-Leaders arts writer returns as artist.”

Another Glimpse of Solace contributor Brendan Coudal has a revamped website. Check it out and you’ll see Brendan makes a variety of paintings and drawings.

Luisa A. Igloria who let me share her work here has a new book, Night Willow published by Phoenicia Publishing in Montreal. If you remember, Luisa has been writing a poem a day for some time now (3.5 years so far and still going strong).

Last Friday (13th) I was lucky enough to attend an innovative poetry event hosted by Highland Park Poetry; it was a Poetry Pentathlon. Hosted by poet Jennifer Dotson the event featured six poets “competing” in five events.

While at the event I picked up a copy of East on Central, ” A Journal of Arts and Letters” from Highland Park, Illinois. Edited by Judith M.K. Tepfer, the journal is gorgeous and features striking poetry and visual art.

Painting titled "Butter Fingers" by Ron Pollack, featured on inside back cover. Wonderful, isn't it?

Before the Pentathlon started, I was able to view the black-and-white photos of Vivian Maier. That’s because Highland Park Poetry hosts the event at the Art Center of Highland Park, which has a gem of a gallery in the northern suburbs.

The next reading hosted by Highland Park Poetry will feature SISMW contributor Pamela Miller. It’s next weekend, Saturday, June 28, at 8 pm,  and will be held at Madame ZuZu’s, an intimate spot at 582 Roger Williams Avenue in Highland Park.

This week’s Guest Post is by Tom Fiffer who wrote it for the New Year. I think it’s appropriate to post now since you may be like me and need a reminder about all those resolutions made some six months ago.

Sometimes the subjects I come across in my reading seem to connect. That’s what I thought when I read the quote featured in Slice of Solace. It’s by Seth Godin. The context for my reading it was that it was cited in an email to me by Victoria Sutherland, editor of Foreword Reviews. It seemed to give her some solace; maybe it will boost your independent spirit too. I have a soft spot for Foreword because not only did the magazine give us a great review but also bestowed  a silver medal.  The enthusiasm of Victoria Sutherland’s email, the message of Seth Godin’s quote, and the spirit of Tim Fiffer’s essay–all good things to bolster my spirits for the second half of 2014.

One more thing. Have you seen the July-August  issue of Poetry?  The visual poems by Elaine Equi inspired my Glimpse of Solace.

Peace, love, and solace
