What’s new? Mahan, Kirk, Donahoo, Hilbert, Bottiglieri, Antler, Meno, Corwin and a contest too!

As usual contributors to Solace in So Many Words have been busy writing and publishing. Susan Mahan has two poems "Voiceover" and "Cabbage Days" in U.M.Ph! Since May, two of her poems with Boston themes have been hanging in Boston City Hall --- they are "Mayday" and "Getting Lucky."  Susan's poem "On the Lower Left Quadrant" is included in the online journal Poetry Porch; the theme was bridges. Kathleen Kirk also has a poem ("Last Step")  in that issue. Fathers was the … [Read more...]

Wrap up the old and unwrap the new

I've been putting off writing this blog, concentrating instead on the holidays and goofing off. But I wanted to tell you what the contributors have been up to because they have been busy.  And, I wanted to tell you the latest about Solace in So Many Words even though I haven't been busy, exactly. First to tell you about my busy  contributors. Arthur Powers ("Jardim Zological") emailed me back in November to say his short story "Thom" was nominated for a Pushcart Prize by … [Read more...]

Beside the City of Angels: A Long Beach Poetry Festival

10/04/2011 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

A highlight of  the recent trip to Long Beach was meeting Donna Hilbert ("Flowers" and"In Quintana Roo"). She teaches weekly poetry workshops and has for years (with many loyal students).  When Joan Corwin and I were in Long Beach, we also learned about the latest project Donna and others in the vibrant Long Beach poetry community have been working on: Beside the City of Angels: A Long Beach Poetry Festival, which will be a daylong event Saturday, October 14.  It will be held … [Read more...]

Gatsby Books in Long Beach–sublime!

Our trip to Long Beach was a definite success and a blast to boot. The reading at Gatsby Books went well as we suspected it would since Sean Moor, who owns Gatsby Books, and Alisha Attell, who coordinates the events there, were so enthusiastic about our coming to read there. Thanks to Sean and Alisha for their warm welcome and hot promotion! The bookstore was packed. The reading was kicked off by Donna Hilbert who is not only well-known but also well-admired in the poetry … [Read more...]
