Solace of the faithful

07/27/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

When I published Solace in So Many Words I made a decision not to include work that was overtly religious. There were several reasons for that. But I know that God and religion and faith and prayer are all-important sources of solace for many people. So today’s posts reflect that. Laura Rodley’s poem "Meeting the Father" in the … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Laura Rodley “Meeting the Father”

07/27/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Meeting the Father Sister Isabelle Rose has met the Father, sits swinging in a long roped swing descending from Heaven where mists   rise like those over the Holyoke Bridge. She sits swinging, her body slim her hair light brown, curled,   no glasses set upon her nose, happy to be held in God’s grace but not in his arms, just as she   was in the convent when married to his son, Jesus Christ, swinging through the … [Read more...]

Exploring the unexplained phenomenon of solace

08/01/2012 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

In 1984 Scott Colborn developed and began to host the Exploring Unexplained Phenomena radio show.  The program became a reality largely due to his long-time interest in all things paranormal--which can be traced back to his childhood.  Over the years, he has interviewed hundreds of guests covering a wide range of topics including extraterrestrials, big foot, spirituality, and ghosts . . . to name just a few.  He recently interviewed Carol Brody Fleet about her book on … [Read more...]

Summer reading (or what contributors are up to)

05/30/2012 By Ellen Beals

Looking for something to read this summer? Everyone--Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, Booklist-- is excited about Solace in So Many Words contributor Joe Meno's new novel Office Girl. Published by Akashic Books, it is due out July 3. Ann McNeal ("Faith") has a new book too. Published by Nuthatch Press, it is called The Spaces Between.  BTW, if you have attended a reading of Solace in So Many Words, chances are you have heard me read "Faith." The poem sums up a lot of my … [Read more...]

Thomas Merton

05/03/2012 By Ellen Beals

I come by this Slice of Solace through my sister who got it in an email from a friend who received it as a "WORD OF THE DAY" posting from Gratefulness.Org on Thursday, April 19, 2012. You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith, and hope. Thomas Merton         … [Read more...]
