Facebook & new books (and poetry & taxes)

04/16/2018 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Happy (almost) Tax Deadline Day! Hope you have your return prepared and that you are receiving a refund. Also hope you did not wake to snow as we did in Chicago. It’s odd certainly to get snow in mid-April and odder still to hear that baseball games are cancelled because of snow. Facebook has been in the news.  I have used this spot previously to discuss my qualms about social media. Sometimes, more often than it used to be, I am tempted to quit Facebook etc. But in … [Read more...]

Old song, old poem: new solace

07/21/2017 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Hey all. Can July speed by any faster? Here’s what I got for you. Check out Kathleen Kirk’s review of Dave Bonta’s book of poems called Ice Mountain on Escape Into Life. I bet you’ll want to read more of Dave Bonta’s work and the archive of Escape into Life. As you know, Kathleen Kirk is a SISMW contributor. Way back in October 2012 Dave Bonta’s poem “Ode to Scythes” was published here. Creativity is curative. Read Mark Brown’s "Arts can help recovery from illness and … [Read more...]

Reading T. C. Boyle, Ellen Bass, Donna Hilbert, Kathleen Kirk . . .

07/01/2016 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Good morning and happy July -- rabbit, rabbit, rabbit.  I've been working on something, but it isn't finished yet. So I'll tell you what I've been reading. "The Fugitive," which is T. C. Boyle's story in the latest issue (July 4) issue of The New Yorker, and there's also a discussion with him on the ethics of disease in the Page-Turner column on the web. Ellen Bass has a poem ("The World Has Need of You")  on June 25 The Writer's Almanac. Donna Hilbert has a poem … [Read more...]

News on contributors (Desilets, Rodley, Mahan, McConnell, Kirk) notes on rejection

02/11/2015 By Ellen Beals 2 Comments

Hello sweeties. Hope you don't have the winter blues and that you are getting enough vitamin D. On January 16 there was a story on NPR by Jason Comely about embracing rejection ("By Making a Game out of Rejection, A Man Conquers Fear"). For a while there I was going to write a post about it, how writers have to embrace rejection.  I was trying to think of it in terms of the Pareto principle, the mathematical principle known as the 80-20 rule, but I couldn’t get it … [Read more...]
