\"Close-up<\/a>Hey there!<\/strong> Happy Mother’s Day.<\/p>\n

One bit of news I heard this week is that Glimmer Train<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>is coming to its final destination \u2013 here\u2019s what appeared in a recent email: \u201cMost of you already know that next fall Glimmer Train<\/em> will\u2014after almost 30 years\u2014finally arrive at the end of the line: The last Writers Ask<\/em>, #85, will be out in October 2019, and Glimmer Train<\/em> #106, the fall issue, will also be out in October (a little later than the usual August) so we have time to tuck every last irresistible story into it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Also, submissions are now open for the next issue of Subprimal Poetry Art<\/strong><\/em>, to be published this summer 2018. Subprimal<\/strong><\/em> pays for poetry, flash fiction, essays, and artwork. This time around, Subprimal<\/strong> <\/em>is also looking for book reviews to include in the issue. Subprimal does not offer payment for reviews however. For details, please see Subprimal Poetry<\/strong> <\/em>submission page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m grateful to Aji Magazine<\/strong><\/em><\/a> for including my poem \u201cTidings\u201d<\/strong> in the latest issue. You can read it for free — Aji Magazine<\/strong><\/em> is a downloadable PDF<\/a>. There are lots of contributors and gorgeous artwork\u2014it\u2019s what I\u2019ll be reading this weekend.\"cover_1_orig\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, I am happy to be able to share this beautiful poem by Lesl\u00e9a Newman<\/strong><\/a>. Lesl\u00e9a Newman<\/strong> has lots of credits to her name. You may have heard about one of her latest projects– A<\/em><\/strong> Letter to Harvey Milk, The Musical<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

She is the author of numerous books. One of her most well known books for children is Heather Has Two Mommies<\/strong><\/em>. Lesl\u00e9a Newman<\/strong> is also known for her poetry and has collections. The poem here, \u201cMy Mother Cups Her Hand\u201d<\/strong> is from her latest poetry book which is titled Lovely<\/strong><\/em> (Headmistress Press).<\/p>\n

BTW, back in 2015, I was also able to celebrate Mother’s Day by sharing poetry by Lesl\u00e9a Newman<\/a>.\u00a0 My continued gratitude to Lesl\u00e9a Newman for letting me share her work.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My mother cups her hand around my cheek
\nAnd draws me close until we\u2019re head to head

We know that she\u2019ll be dead within a week

I swallow back a monumental shriek
\nAnd curse the goddamn tumors that have spread

She stares at me, her brown eyes growing bleak

Lesl\u00e9a (pronounced \u201cLez-LEE-uh\u201d) Newman<\/strong> is the author of 70 books for readers of all ages, including A Letter to Harvey Milk<\/em>; October Mourning<\/em>: A Song for Matthew Shepard<\/em>; I Carry My Mother<\/em>; The Boy Who Cried Fabulous<\/em>; Ketzel, the Cat Who Composed<\/em>; and Heather Has Two Mommies<\/em>, which was the first children\u2019s book to portray lesbian families in a positive way<\/p>\n

She has received many, many literary awards. Her award-winning short story, A Letter To Harvey Milk,<\/strong><\/em> has been made into a film<\/strong> and adapted for the stage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In addition to being an author, Lesl\u00e9a Newman<\/strong> is a popular guest lecturer. Currently she is a faculty mentor at Spalding University\u2019s brief residency MFA in Writing<\/strong> program.<\/p>\n

Recently published books include the poetry collections: Lovely<\/em> (Headmistress Press); I Carry My Mother<\/em> (Golden Crown Literary Society Award and Massachusetts Center for the Book \u201cMust Read\u201d title); picture book Here Is The World: A Year of Jewish Holidays<\/em> (Sydney Taylor Notable); Ketzel, The Cat Who Composed<\/em> (Massachusetts Book Award, Sydney Taylor Award, and Cat Writers Association Best \u201cLitter-ary\u201d Award); Sparkle Boy<\/em> (Lee and Low, 2017); and Gittel\u2019s Journey: An Ellis Island Story<\/em> (Abrams, 2018).<\/p>\n
