And, happy 4th of July. Hope you have some fun.<\/p>\n<p>And to my fellow Moon Children, HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Here&#8217;s a poem I wrote twenty years ago, but I still like it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peace, love, and solace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>July begins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The day before I turn 41<br \/>\nI brood, wash dishes,<br \/>\nthink how my husband and sons<br \/>\nhave taken no time to shop,<br \/>\nhow I hadn\u2019t seen my boys<br \/>\nscurry away with crayons and paper<br \/>\nto make&#8211;all I asked for&#8211;a heartfelt card.<br \/>\nI clean the toilets,<br \/>\ntry to rid the blue bathroom<br \/>\nof that pissy smell,<br \/>\nthink this is my station in life,<br \/>\nkneeling before dirt, cleaning.<br \/>\nI\u2019m stern with the kids,<br \/>\nnever yelling, but always under my voice<br \/>\nis that tone&#8211;it keeps them<br \/>\nfrom arguing when I order beds be made<br \/>\nand laundry sent down the chute.<\/p>\n<p>I reason it is my period coming<br \/>\nor my birthday tomorrow,<br \/>\nthat makes me feel<br \/>\nold and suburban and unfulfilled,<br \/>\na messy home despite my housekeeping,<br \/>\na husband whose work is more demanding<br \/>\nthan I care to be,<br \/>\nand kids who are growing away<br \/>\nbefore I\u2019m done needing them.<\/p>\n<p>The next day<br \/>\nbreakfast is great&#8211;<br \/>\na plateful of pecan pancakes<br \/>\nwith the boys and then we talk<br \/>\nabout the man we saw the other day<br \/>\nwho yelled at a woman and her kid<br \/>\nin the parking lot at the shopping center,<br \/>\nabout Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield,<br \/>\nabout reining in impulses<br \/>\nand why parents must teach compassion, civility.<br \/>\nThey do not squirm too much,<br \/>\neven keep up their side of the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Then we\u2019re off to the lake<br \/>\nwith the new beach chair<br \/>\nmy husband had bought and left<br \/>\nwith a bow in the kitchen.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a deluxe model with cooler,<br \/>\ndrink holder, and backpack straps.<br \/>\nWe\u2019re the only ones<br \/>\nswimming because the water is 60 degrees<br \/>\nThe boys say it\u2019s so cold<br \/>\nit makes their balls hurt<br \/>\nand they play in the sand to warm up<br \/>\nuntil we go home for lunch,<br \/>\nsitting around the table in our damp suits,<br \/>\neating pickles out of the jar,<br \/>\nchips, and salami sandwiches.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch they watch tv<br \/>\nand I read the paper and drowse<br \/>\nuntil their dad comes home to leave me<br \/>\nto a peaceful bath while they shop<br \/>\nfor cards and cake. Dressed, I take the dog<br \/>\nfor a long walk and when I come home<br \/>\nmy son\u2019s at the computer,<br \/>\nmaking his gift, a sign that says<br \/>\n\u201cMom Kicks Butt.\u201d<br \/>\nMy other boy runs to get a familiar pink box,<br \/>\n\u201cWhite Shoulders,\u201d<br \/>\nthey had bought at Walgreen\u2019s.<br \/>\nThe college girl from down the street<br \/>\nwatches the kids while Dave and I<br \/>\nhave supper at an Italian restaurant<br \/>\nand we never run out of conversation<br \/>\nand we don\u2019t just talk about the kids.<\/p>\n<p>I have steak with Portobello mushrooms,<br \/>\nsomething no one else in my house likes.<br \/>\nBy the time we come home,<br \/>\nthe kids ready for bed,<br \/>\ncrowd around the kitchen table,<br \/>\nput their arms around me, and<br \/>\nI rub their smooth tanned backs.<br \/>\nThey make moony faces at their father<br \/>\nbut he doesn\u2019t comprehend their signs<br \/>\nso one of them asks<br \/>\nabout the dessert&#8211;banana cream pie,<br \/>\nmy favorite.
