\"\"\u00a0Earl Simmons<\/strong><\/a>, better known as the rapper DMX<\/strong>, died last week. I didn\u2019t know much about him or his raps; the only music of his that was even slightly familiar to me was \u201cParty Up (Up in Here).”<\/em> But the more I read about him on Twitter and heard about him on The Breakfast Club<\/em><\/strong> and other news reports, the more I wanted to learn about him. People called him a poet and a preacher. In an MTV interview, DMX said he thought of his lyrics as poetry<\/a>. He appeared on Def Poetry<\/em><\/strong> with a spoken word poem “The Industry”<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>about the music business. His 1998 album \u201cIt’s Dark and Hell is Hot\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 includes \u201cPrayer,\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>the beginning lyrics I provide below.
