Mathes and Pat Rahmann that they will be able to read at out next event, which is Thursday, July 21, at The BookMarket in Glenview. Woo-hoo! And just so you know, the BookMarket is part of the Barbara’s Bookstores chain. Barbara’s UIC hosted our May 12 event, and we thank Barbara’s for supporting us again.

When I met Teresa S. Mathes (Terri), she lived in Northfield. Now she resides in San Diego and has arranged a stopover in Chicago between business trips. People from the Glenview/Northfield area might know Terri from St. James the Lesser Episcopal Church where her husband served as rector. I got to know Terri through the writing group I have previously mentioned in other posts. It is a 50-member group that meets in Glencoe, IL, and is simply known as The Writers, and it has been around since the 1960s (or maybe even earlier). It is through The Writers that I also met Pat Rahmann. She is known as a novelist and playwright, but has contributed a poem to Solace in So Many Words. As one of the proprietors of Books on Vernon, Pat was instrumental in helping to establish Writers’ Theatre, providing it with (among other things) its first home in the back of the bookstore. On Wednesday mornings, The Writers would meet there too, discussing manuscripts. When our thoughts wandered from the pages at hand, we could look at the stage and marvel how it was transformed for the latest play. We meet at a church now and though the room can handily accommodate The Writers around a table, I still miss the back of the bookstore with its magical atmosphere.

Other writers who will read at the event incude D. J. Lachance from Milwaukee, Kathleene Donahoo (from Lake Forest, IL and also a member of The Writers), J. Scott Smith (from Wilmette, IL, a musician and writer who is also a member of The Writers and one of this year’s co-presidents of that group), and Joan Corwin (from Evanston, IL, and also a member of The Writers). We are awaiting the spring/summer issue of the lit journal Pearl to read Joan’s “Gone Missing,” which won the Pearl Magazine Fiction Prize. I’ll let you know when the magazine is available.

So to recap, here’s the information on our next event for Solace in So Many Words

July 21, Thursday, 7 pm

The BookMarket

2651 Navy Blvd.
Glen Town Center, Glenview, Il 60026
phone: 847.904.7304

Readers will be: J.
