Hello everybody. With the temperatures spiking, the word for the day is: languorous.<\/p>\n

But I know even in this heat \u00a0you can manage to read a story, and if you read any story today, check out Patty Somlo’s “Resistors” in the latest issue Hamilton Stone Review<\/a>. <\/em>It is a stunner. \u00a0And you won’t go to a dinner party again without thinking about it. \u00a0(BTW, Patty wrote “Starting to Breathe” in Solace in So Many Words<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

New Pages<\/a><\/em> (which is a website all writers should have bookmarked) reviews publications and lit journals. In a recent review of Jackson Hole Review<\/em>, the reviewer singled out Patty Somlo’s story “Warriors” and had this to say about it: “<\/em>I had some trepidation that Patty Somlo\u2019s snapshot narrative of a Native American Vietnam Vet\u2019s return \u201chome\u201d in \u201cWarrior\u201d would fall into stereotypes, but the expressive detail and click-clean dialogue doesn\u2019t allow this. Somlo deftly packs every line with external story as well as internal contemplation of the main character; I could not help but get caught up in the story\u2019s final sweep of emotion. I love it when a story does that.” \u00a0See? I’m not the only one who thinks Patty is a talented writer.<\/p>\n

Press 53 has also recognized the talent of two contributors to Solace in So Many Words<\/em>. \u00a0I am speaking of Kathleene Donahoo (who wrote “Stops and Starts”) and Arthur Powers (who wrote “Jardim Zoologic”). \u00a0Both were finalists in Press 53’s 2011 Open Awards. \u00a0Kathleene’s story is called “Strands” and Arthurs’s is “Back Country People.” Congrats to both!<\/p>\n

Press 53<\/a> is another resource for writers and readers, with its frequent calls for submissions and an extensive catalog of unique anthologies and compelling fiction. The editor is Kevin Morgan Watson and he works really hard for the written word.<\/p>\n
