\"\"This past Sunday I went to the American Artworks Gallery<\/a><\/strong> in Forest Park to attend a reading event for After Hours<\/a><\/em><\/strong> magazine in which Ellen T. McKnight<\/strong>, friend to Solace in So Many Words<\/em>, was a featured reader (along with Christopher Gallinari<\/strong>). The venue was cozy, and like most readings emceed by Al DeGenova<\/strong>, who along with Pat Hertel<\/strong> edits After Hours<\/em>, it had a relaxed and mellow vibe.<\/p>\n

After Hours <\/em><\/strong>is a one of Chicago\u2019s great little magazines. Published twice a year (January and June) for more than a decade, the magazine is top quality in terms of its contents and print production values, as each issue showcases photography and visual art as well as writing. Just the other day, After Hours<\/em> and its publisher were given some well-deserved recognition when they were featured in Chicago Artists Resource<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, a beautiful fall day, I bought the Summer 2011 issue of After Hours <\/em>in which\u00a0Barry Silesky <\/strong>(“The New Animal\u201d and \u201cMusic Lesson\u201d) is the featured writer. Six of his poems are published and there is a full-page bio and photo.<\/p>\n

Barry\u2019s poetry\u00a0 books include: The New Tenants<\/em> (Eye of the Comet Press, 1991), One Thing that Can Save Us<\/em> (Coffee House Press, 1994), This Disease<\/em> (University of Tampa Press,) and Greatest Hits<\/em> (Pudding House). \u00a0He has also written two biographies: Ferlinghetti, The Artist in His Time<\/em> (Warner Books) and John Gardner, Literary Outlaw<\/em> (Algonquin Books).<\/p>\n

When you read Barry\u2019s bio, you might understand why I think of him as the definition of a working poet <\/strong>for he has been studying, writing, teaching, running workshops and editing\u00a0Another Chicago Magazine<\/em> for some 25 years.\u00a0 He\u2019s dedicated to poetry. \u00a0If you’d like to read more about Barry, Claire Kirch<\/strong> gave him a nice write-up in 2004 in Publisher’s Weekly <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

There is a quality of yearning in his work that speaks to me and is evident in his poems published in After Hours<\/em>. For instance, \u201cWorking on The Roof,\u201d which is from Barry\u2019s first book,\u00a0admonishes:\u00a0 \u201cThe thing is to pay attention.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

Since T. C. Boyle<\/strong> is a writer whose excellence is recognized by just about everybody, it is not such a remarkable coincidence that Barry\u2019s poem \u201cThe Wanting Animal\u201d <\/strong> published in After Hours, <\/em>uses a line from T. C. Boyle as an epigram. <\/em> But I think it is pretty cool that both the source of inspiration and the poet are in Solace in So Many Words<\/em>, and similarly in his poem, “The New Animal,”<\/strong> in Solace in So Many Words<\/em>, Barry also uses a line from T. C. Boyle as a jumping-off point. \u00a0T. C. Boyle gets you thinking, no doubt. \u00a0And so does Barry Silesky.<\/p>\n

Tugging on my heart are the last lines:<\/p>\n

“For once, maybe it does. Maybe<\/strong><\/p>\n

this is it, alive and various; music<\/strong><\/p>\n

calling your name, that you can\u2019t<\/strong><\/p>\n

hear, and want, and want, and want.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
