\"\"<\/a>I’ve been putting off writing this blog, concentrating instead on the holidays and goofing off. But I wanted to tell you what the contributors have been up to because they have been busy. \u00a0And, I wanted to tell you the latest about Solace in So Many Words<\/em><\/strong> even though I haven’t been busy, exactly.<\/p>\n

First to tell you about my busy \u00a0contributors.\u00a0Arthur Powers<\/strong> (“Jardim Zological”) emailed me back in November to say his short story “Thom” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize<\/strong> by the editors of Prime Number Magazine<\/strong><\/em>. Have you read Prime Number<\/a><\/em> yet? \u00a0It’s an online gem put out by the folks at Press 53<\/strong>. Two of Arthur’s short stories have been accepted for inclusion in an environmentally oriented short story anthology called Being Human: Call of the Wild<\/em><\/strong> by Bibliotekos<\/a>. Arthur’s short story “Come into My House and Stay” was published in Dappled Things<\/a>. <\/strong><\/em>His poem “February” was selected for an anthology of the best poems appearing in Christianity and Literature over the past 60 years and four of his poems (\u201cWorkmen Repairing The Flagpole At The Municipal Hall,\u201d \u00a0\u201cTrios on a Rose Trombone\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThe Beggar Woman\u201d and \u201c1945\u201d)\u00a0appear in the Winter 2011 issue\u00a0hotmetal press<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Much of Arthur’s poetry draws on his days in Brazil.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Kathleene Donahoo<\/strong> (“Stops and Starts”) has placed her story “Mr. Frank” in either the winter 2011 or summer 2012 issue of the publication \u00a0Muse & Stone<\/a>, <\/em>which is put out by Waynesburg College in Waynesburg, PA. Her story \u201cSouth\u201d will be in an upcoming Pearl Magazine<\/em>.\u00a0 And, Kathy\u2019s \u201cA Spot of Certain Darkness\u201d placed in Press 53<\/a>\u2019s flash fiction contest and appears in this year\u2019s Open Awards Anthology<\/em>. \u00a0BTW, the deadline for this year’s contest is at the end of March.<\/p>\n

In addition to writing poetry, Ellen Bass <\/strong>(“And What If I Spoke of Despair,” “Don’t Expect Applause,” “Jack Gottlieb’s in Love” and “The Thing Is”) holds poetry workshops. \u00a0For the most up-to-date info, check out Ellen’s website<\/a>. \u00a0 From\u00a0May 29 to June 3, 2012, she is co-hosting \u2028\u201dTruth & Beauty,\u201d\u2028a poetry workshop with Dorianne Laux<\/strong> and Marie Howe<\/strong> at\u2028Carter Hall in Millwood, VA.<\/p>\n

Kathleen Kirk<\/strong> was awarded the 2011 Ekphrasis Prize by Ekphrasis Journal<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>for the poem \u201cRepose\u201d based on the painting Repose<\/em> by John White Alexander. \u00a0She\u2019ll be teaching a class in ekphrasis this winter at the McLean County Arts Center in Bloomington, IL. Her next chapbook, Nocturnes<\/strong>, <\/em>is forthcoming from Hyacinth Girl Press<\/a><\/strong>, and will be ready in time for the AWP Conference<\/strong>, so look for it at the same booth with Solace in So Many Words<\/em>! \u00a0(Yes, Weighed Words<\/strong> will be sharing a table with Hyacinth Girl Press<\/strong> and Arsenic Lobster<\/a><\/strong>–more details to follow.) \u00a0Kathleen \u00a0has work current or forthcoming in several print and online magazines, including Umbrella<\/em>, Stirring <\/em>and YB <\/em>. \u00a0You can always find out what\u2019s new with Kathleen (and what she\u2019s reading) at her blog, Wait! Kathleen is also poetry editor<\/strong> at a great blog spot called Escape into Life<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, which is a source for all kinds of good writing and art. \u00a0But before you visit the site, make sure you have some time on your hands because it is easy to get absorbed by the many fascinating postings.<\/p>\n

<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Adanna Literary Journal <\/strong><\/em>just sponsored a love poem contest and Kathleen’s poem “Waiting for the Revolution” took first place. \u00a0Kathleen and more than a dozen contributors to Adanna <\/em>will read at the AWP<\/strong> on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 7:00 pm<\/strong> in the Private Dining Room of the Hilton Chicago Hotel.\u00a0 The reading is open to the public \u2013 hope to see you there.<\/p>\n

\"U.S.U.S. Poet Laureate Philip Levine <\/strong>(“Waking in Alicante” and “Songs”)\u00a0will be in Chicago for an event sponsored by the Poetry Foundation<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cPoetry off the Shelf: Carol Ann Duffy and Philip Levine\u201d will be held Friday, March 2, 8:30 pm<\/strong> at the \u00a0International Ballroom \u2028North & South, Hilton Chicago Hotel, \u2028720 South Michigan Avenue.\u00a0 The British and United States Poets Laureate appear together for a rare joint reading and conversation moderated by Poetry<\/em> senior editor Don Share<\/strong>.\u00a0 Free admission on a first come, first served basis.<\/p>\n

You can also read a new poem “Pennsylvania Pastoral” by Philip Levine<\/strong> in the Jan 2, 2012 issue of The New Yorker<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Antler<\/strong> (“Stop to Think,” “For All a Baby Knows” and “First Breath, Last Breath”) and Noel Sloboda<\/strong> (“Backyard Burial”) are published in Verse Wisconsin<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (issue 107) “Earthworks.” \u00a0 Jeff Poniewaz <\/strong>(“Hearing My Prayers”) has contributed an essay (“The Making of an Eco Poet”<\/a>) as well as four poems to the issue. \u00a0BTW, when Solace in So Many Words<\/em><\/strong> came out, I sent a copy to Verse Wisconsin<\/em> where it waits for review. \u00a0Do you know any Wisconsin writers who would like to review it?\"\"<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

\"thefirstcut<\/a>I had a poem “Vaya con Dios” \u00a0in an ezine out of Listowel, Ireland called thefirstcut <\/em>(issue 4)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As I have mentioned, Weighed Words<\/strong> will be at the AWP conference February 29 to March 3, 2012. \u00a0Also, we have an upcoming reading at Wilmette Public Library on Thursday, January 26.<\/p>\n

The other news is Pushcart<\/strong> nominations. \u00a0These selections were difficult as I love every piece in Solace in So Many Words<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0 The six nominations are:<\/p>\n

Short Story: \u00a0“Details” by Joan Corwin<\/strong> and “Heartbeat” by J. Scott Smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Essay: “Alleys” by Michael Constantine McConnell<\/strong> and “Starting to Breathe” by Patty Somlo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Poetry: “Veritas Premitur Non Opprimitur” by Brent Calderwood<\/strong> and “Faith” \u00a0by Ann McNeal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I have also entered Solace in So Many Words<\/strong><\/em> into some contests with the hope the book gets some critical recognition.<\/p>\n
