Dengler Memorial Poetry Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some time ago I had to share the sad news that a contributor to <strong>Solace in So Many Words<\/strong>, <strong><a title=\"Legacy Obituary for Amy Dengler\" href=\"http:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/democratandchronicle\/obituary.aspx?n=amy-l-dengler&amp;pid=148631320\" target=\"_blank\">Amy Dengler<\/a>,<\/strong> who wrote &#8220;Portuguese Sweetbread&#8221; passed away. Amy lived in Gloucester, MA, and was active in <strong>Wordcrafters<\/strong>, a group chapter of the Massachusetts State Poetry Society. \u00a0 Her colleagues have started a poetry contest in her name&#8211; here are the guidelines:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Wordcrafters<\/em><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> a chapter of the Massachusetts State Poetry Society, has established an annual poetry contest\u00a0to honor the memory of Amy L. Dengler, who was an accomplished poet and active member of the North Shore writing community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Amy Dengler Memorial Contest<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The contest is open to all adults.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Prizes will be awarded\u00a0to\u00a0poems for first,      second and third place winners ($50\/$20\/$10).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Contestants may enter any number of poems at $3 per      poem, but only one poem will be eligible for a prize.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Entries must be the original work of the poet.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Poems are limited to 40 lines total.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Subject and\u00a0poetry form are poet&#8217;s choice.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Poems\u00a0entered must be unpublished and not      currently\u00a0entered in any other\u00a0contest.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Only poems that have not won a prize may be      entered.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">All poems must be titled.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Poems must be typed on 8-1\/2&#8243; x 11&#8243; white      paper &#8211; No illustrations.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Send one original (with no name) for the Judge, and one      copy with poet&#8217;s name, address and email address in upper RIGHT-HAND      corner (of DUPLICATE ONLY).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">No poems will be returned. \u00a0All non-winning poems will be destroyed after the      contest.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The deadline for the contest is May 15.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Make entry fees payable to: \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Amy Dengler Fund<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Mail all entries and fees to: \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Roberta Hung,\u00a0Contest Chair, \u00a08 Dundee Street, Salem, MA\u00a0 01970<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For information, please email: \u00a0 \u00a0 robette02 \u00a0followed by @yahoo.com<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mi-cache.legacy.com\/legacy\/images\/Cobrands\/DemocratAndChronicle\/Photos\/RDC018992-1_20110214.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"4\" align=\"LEFT\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Amy&#8217;s last book of poems is a chapbook called \u00a0<em><strong>At the Corner of Lost and Found <\/strong><\/em>and I bought a copy from Roberta. The fifty+ poems here are sectioned into four parts: Childhood, Essex County, Travels and Interiors. \u00a0 In her poem &#8220;The Nature of Radiance&#8221; which is subititled: &#8220;On Frank Caspar&#8217;s <em>A Field Guide to the Heavens<\/em>,&#8221; Amy writes&#8221; &#8220;I pore over the pages like cream \/ lines like shelves \/ one upon the other bearing the splendor \/ of star and compass, \/ the stain of intelligence, a kitchen table \/ conscientious with notes.&#8221; These lines could apply to the reverence I felt reading Amy&#8217;s work; one poem and then another and another that drew me in and left me awed. \u00a0I hope to get permission to reprint one or two here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"border-collapse: collapse; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some time ago I had to share the sad news that a contributor to Solace in So Many Words, Amy Dengler, who wrote &#8220;Portuguese Sweetbread&#8221; passed away.
