\"Home\"<\/a>J. Scott Smith<\/strong> (“Heartbeat”) has a new story “Silence” in Luna Station Quarterly<\/a><\/em>, which is a magazine focused on speculative fiction by up and coming women authors.<\/p>\n

Patty Somlo<\/strong> (“Starting to Breathe”) has a new story “Where He Took His First Breath” \u00a0in The Write Room<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Donna Hilbert<\/strong> (“Flowers” and “In Quintana Roo”) has a new guest blog on NEXTV’s ALL LIT Up blogpost by James Goertel<\/a>. \u00a0I also wrote a guest essay \u00a0(“In Service of Poetry”) for ALL LIT UP<\/a>. \u00a0Many thanks to James Goertel<\/strong> and Randy Becker<\/strong> for letting us write about poetry. \u00a0Donna has two poems in the latest Pearl <\/em>magazine: “To My Piriformis” and “Blind.” \u00a0She also has a poem “Giullieta Hears a Prophecy” in Poets\/Artists<\/a>,<\/em> issue 31. \u00a0Donna also has work in the French publication Le Page Blanc<\/em>. \u00a0More poems of Donna’s are forthcoming in other publications, and I will tell you about those when they are published.<\/p>\n

\"intro_issue01\"Chicago has a brand new magazine: The Chicagoan<\/a>, <\/em>which describes itself this way: “The Chicagoan<\/em> is a non-profit media organization whose mission is to document the arts, culture, innovators and history of Chicago and the greater Midwest through long-form storytelling.” \u00a0In the inaugural issue,\u00a0Joe Meno<\/strong> (“The Strange Episode of Aqua Voyage”) \u00a0has a story, “The Secret Society of Alphonse F.!” \u00a0 Meno fans will be glad to learn this story is an excerpt from his new novel, Office Girl<\/em>, which will be out this July. \u00a0I signed on as a subscriber to The Chicagoan<\/em> as soon as I heard about the magazine, but I have not read it yet. \u00a0I have to say it is gorgeous: glossy, perfect-bound, and chocked full of fiction, profiles, history, essay, interviews and conversations.<\/p>\n

If you pick up issue 18 of \u00a0Poems & Plays<\/a><\/em>, a journal of poetry and drama published each spring by Middle Tennessee State University, you will be able to read work by two contributors to Solace in So Many Words<\/em>; Elizabeth Kerlikowske<\/strong> (“The Industry of Sleep” and “To Love an\u00a0October Garden”) has two poems: “Faces on Plates” and “Poem Without a Single Lie In It.” \u00a0Kathleen Kirk<\/strong> (“The Solace of Reading: How to Survive Hormonal and Spiritual Upheavals of Midlife,” “Postponing a Response to the Face of Mortality,” and “The Heartbreak House”) also has two poems in it: “After the Documentary” and “Nocturne in Gray and Gold.” \u00a0If you get the latest issue (19) of Poems & Plays,<\/em> you will \u00a0find three more of Kathleen’s \u00a0poems: “Cassandra Loses Her Licence,” “Cassandra Turns Into the Moon,” and “Cassandra Takes Off Her Mask.”<\/p>\n

The latest issue \u00a0(Winter 2012) of the online journal blossombones<\/a><\/em>, publishes more Cassandra poems by Kathleen Kirk<\/strong>: \u00a0\u201cCassandra Would Like to See Today,\u201d \u201cCassandra Reads Beowulf Aloud to Her Imaginary Daughter,\u201d \u201cCassandra Gets Lost\u201d and \u201cCassandra Loses Her Grip\u201d and also a poem by Pamela Miller<\/strong> (\u201cWhat It\u2019s All About\u201d) that is titled \u201cOn Our Honeymoon in New York City, My Husband Turns into Times Square.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kathleen<\/strong> also has poems (“Doorknob” and “Biopsy”) \u00a0in the most recent \u00a0The Medulla Review<\/a><\/em> (Volume 3, issue 2). \u00a0She also has a poem (“Swimmer’s Ear”) in Intentional Walk<\/a><\/em>, the only online journal devoted to poetry about sports. In Lake Effect<\/em>, Kathleen’s poem “Finally the Rain” appears. \u00a0Lake Effect<\/a><\/em> is a publication of the School of Humanities and Social Science of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Another great Chicago publication is After Hours, <\/em>and in the Winter 2012 issue, Kathleen’s \u00a0poem “The Sadness of Midas, golden and apart” appears.<\/p>\n

<\/a>\"Open<\/a>BMA (Berkshire Media Audio)<\/strong> has produced an 80-minute audio book recording of\u00a0Open Meadow: Odes to Nature<\/em>, by\u00a0Wally Swist<\/strong> (“March Wind”). \u00a0About 65 of Wally’s poems are included , and a dozen are accompanied by musical compositions by Claude Debussy, Gabriel Faure and Vaughan\u00a0Williams.<\/p>\n

Ellen Bass<\/strong> (“And What if I Spoke of Despair,” “Don’t Expect Applause,” “Jack Gottlieb’s in Love,” and “The Thing Is”) has a number of workshops planned so check out her website.<\/a> For example “Writing and Knowing” \u00a0in Esalan will be held for its eighth year with Dorianne Laux and Joe Millar in July.<\/p>\n

Last week I went to an event for Highland Park Poetry<\/a><\/strong> in which poets read the works chosen to appear on north suburban Pace buses. \u00a0My poem “Some days” will ride the bus in August. I was so pleased to see the stunning graphic art for the poem, which was created by Isa Spoerry<\/strong>, who is a student at Highland Park High School. \u00a0It was great to meet Isa and her mother. \u00a0A big shout out of thanks to Jennifer Dotson<\/strong> who works so hard on behalf of poetry.<\/p>\n
