As usual contributors to Solace in So Many Words<\/strong> have been busy writing and publishing.<\/p>\n

Susan Mahan<\/strong> has two poems “Voiceover” and “Cabbage Days” in U.M.Ph!<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>Since May, two of her poems with Boston themes have been hanging in Boston City Hall — they are “Mayday” and “Getting Lucky.” \u00a0Susan’s poem “On the Lower Left Quadrant” is included in the online journal Poetry Porch<\/a><\/strong><\/em>; the theme was bridges. Kathleen Kirk<\/strong> also has a poem (“Last Step”) \u00a0in that issue.\"\"<\/p>\n

Fathers was the theme for\u00a0the June issue of\u00a0Quill and Parchment,<\/em><\/strong> and Susan’s poem “Night and Day” was included. \u00a0“Measuring Up” and “To the Mother of Boys” recently appeared in Cradle Songs: Anthology of Poems about Motherhood<\/strong><\/em> (published by Quill and Parchment).<\/p>\n

In July, Susan’s poem “Spectacles” appears in Beltway Poetry Quarterly<\/a>, <\/em><\/strong>the theme of which is the federal government (not usually the stuff of poetry).<\/p>\n

Kathleene Donahoo’s<\/strong> story “Mr. Frank” appears in Muse & Stone<\/em><\/strong>, the literary journal from Waynesburg University. She also has stories forthcoming in Saranac Review<\/strong><\/em> and Pearl Magazine<\/strong> — I will let you know when those issues are out.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Pearl Magazine<\/strong><\/em>, did I tell you that Donna Hilbert<\/strong> has work in issue 45 of Pearl Magazine<\/strong><\/em>? \u00a0Also, Donna’s terrific poem “Mother Tongue” just appeared July 17, 2012 on the your daily poem site<\/a> <\/strong>(it originally appeared in Pearl<\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Jan Bottiglieri<\/strong> has three poems in issue 23 of \u00a0Prime Number<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, which is the online magazine from the awesome\u00a0Press 53<\/strong>. \u00a0The poems are “Nineteen,” “Homunculus,” and “The Fiery Skipper.”<\/p>\n

Antler<\/strong> has a poem called “Pornographic Ice Sculptures in Eternity” in Express Milwaukee<\/a>. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"Chicagoans especially \u00a0are awaiting Joe Meno’s<\/a> <\/strong>new novel, Office Girl (Akashic Press) — <\/strong><\/em>there is a party this Thursday at The Empty Bottle in Chicago. (I am trying to talk someone into going with me as I know I want to attend.) \u00a0The Night of Words & Music also \u00a0features Patrick Somerville<\/strong> and Jac Jemc<\/strong> and \u00a0is presented by Curbside Splendor Publishing<\/strong> and The Chicagoan<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Kerry Langan<\/strong> got in touch to let me know of a new short story contest for woman writers. It is the first of what will be an annual contest sponsored by the Women’s National Book Association<\/a>—<\/strong>the deadline is November 1.<\/p>\n

Congrats to Joan Corwin<\/strong> whose short story “Girls with Guns” was a finalist for \u00a0Sycamore Review’s<\/a><\/em><\/strong> Wabash Prize Fiction 2012 contest and will appear in issue 24.2, which should be out any day now. \u00a0Also, if you are a movie buff, you may want to read Joan’s guest blog (and other entries by host Barbara Froman<\/strong>) on\u00a0Beyond Willow Bend<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>blogspot. \u00a0Joan writes about Jean Renoir’s<\/strong> film The Grand Illusion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One more thing, I read the June issue of Poetry<\/strong><\/em> magazine from cover to cover–it had some pretty great stuff in it; I especially liked the poem called “And The Gauchos Sing” written by Mike Puican, <\/strong>with its dedication “For Barry Silesky<\/strong>.” \u00a0 I don’t know whether I liked most the opening lines (“Catalpas blooming up and down Catalpa Street, car alarms blooming \/ up and down Waveland Avenue–an instant of nature without the narrative.”) or the closing ones (“I tell you that everything has already been written. You say \/ on a long, difficult pilgrimage Basho wrote on his hat.”) \u00a0Lovely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
