On July 22, a Sunday afternoon, Woman Made Gallery<\/a><\/strong> (and Nina Corwin<\/strong>) hosted a poetry reading by \u201cPoets who Open Doors.\u201d \u00a0Featured readers were Kristy Bowen<\/strong> (dancing girl press<\/a><\/strong>), Shanny Jean Maney<\/strong> (The Encyclopedia Show<\/a><\/strong>), Jennifer Karmin<\/strong> (Red Rover Series<\/a><\/strong>), Emily Rose Kahn\u2013Sheahan<\/strong> (Mental Graffiti<\/a><\/strong>, Real Talk Live<\/a><\/strong>), Johanny Vazquez Paz<\/strong> (Palabra Pura<\/strong>, Guild Complex<\/a><\/strong>) and Susan Yount <\/strong>(Arsenic Lobster<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, Chicago Poetry Bordello<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n

It was a lively and lovely event. Jennifer Karmin <\/strong>asked the audience to participate.\u00a0 Emily Rose Kahn-Sheahan <\/strong>read a poem called \u201cMouthy,\u201d which I certainly identified with, and she also read a remarkable persona poem invoking Amelia Earhart and Sally Ride (made even more remarkable when the next day we heard the news that Sally Ride passed away). Kristy Bowen<\/strong> captivated the audience when she read from dreamy works in progress and Johanny Vazquez Paz<\/strong> captured my attention (and heart) when she read a poem about her son and his desire for a tattoo.<\/p>\n

Like the event for Solace in So Many Words<\/em><\/strong> at WMG <\/strong>December 11, this poetry reading was recorded and will be available on the WBEZ’s\u00a0Chicago Amplified<\/strong> site soon. (Our reading is up on the site and you can listen to it: here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>I was taken with all the poetry and poets. After hearing Shanny Jean Maney<\/strong> read, I wanted a copy of her book, I Love Science<\/em><\/strong> (writebloody.com<\/a>).\u00a0 She mixes humor and sentiment successfully. I don\u2019t want to give away the book so I\u2019ll only give some selections.\u00a0 Here\u2019s one of her poems\u2014it\u2019s called \u201cJellybeans! Are! My! Favorite! Legume!\u201d<\/strong> \u201cThe only candy, \/ that at its very best, makes\u00a0 \/ you want to eat fruit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the middle stanza from her poem \u201cThe Universe:\u201d<\/strong> \u201cEver since I was thirteen, \/ I have had a crush on the \/ Periodic Table of Elements– \/ a proof illustrating that anarchy \/ is governed by balance, \/ and mathematics of existence \/ are indicative of something \/ immeasurable.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0Hearing Shanny read made me want to attend The\u00a0Encyclopedia Show<\/strong>. \u00a0The next one will be about dogs and will take place Thursday, September 6, 7:30 pm at The Vittum Theatre in Chicago.<\/p>\n

I was a little late to the reading so I didn\u2019t hear Susan Yount<\/strong>.\u00a0 I am assuming she read from her wonderful chapbook \u201cCatastrophe Theory,\u201d<\/strong> which came out this year from Hyacinth Girl Press<\/a><\/strong>. Susan\u2019s poems will win you over with their honesty, intensity and intelligence. I especially admire the title poem (\u201cCatastrophe Theory\u201d), as well as \u201cWhy Ophelia,\u201d \u201cSpring Break,\u201d \u201cI Worked for a Boss Who Wanted Sex,\u201d \u00a0and \u201cHumoring Me\u201d (and pretty much the whole book).\u00a0 Here\u2019s a taste of Susan\u2019s work, from her poem \u201cElementary Catastrophe:\u201d<\/strong> \u201cHurt was hanging like an ambush, \/ like an asshole just waiting\/ to break up the night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Susan is the editor and publisher of Arsenic Lobster Poetry Journal<\/em><\/strong>, madam of the Chicago Poetry Bordello<\/strong>, a writer for Rebellious Magazine’s <\/em>Rebellious\u00a0Women in Poetry column<\/a>, and most recently, a publisher (Misty Publications<\/a><\/strong>). \u00a0The premiere title from Misty Publications has recently come out; it is Overpass<\/em><\/strong> by Steve Davenport<\/strong>. It is his second book, the first was Uncontainable Noise<\/em>, and the book notes describe Overpass<\/em> as revisiting \u201cUncontainable Noise\u2019s<\/em> investment in explosive forms (yodel sonnets, 100-line sonnets) via many forms but most often carefully contained, roughneck reductions (curtal or curtailed sonnets). The terrain is the Illinois floodplain (aka American Bottom) across the river from St. Louis; the figure who hovers above it all is a breast cancer victim named Overpass Girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a taste of Steve\u2019s work from \u201cThis Sestina Has Been Sinking;\u201d\u00a0 \u201cSestina, tonight\u2019s the night I push you off the overpass. \/ I\u2019m done with your six kinds of hell.\u00a0 Your demanding sky \/ your French complications, your clouds in my happy wagon, \/ your forty-two words for rain, your pearl-handled gun, \/ this concrete and asphalt that leap-frogs the low ground \/ locals call the Bottom, dirt cursed with industry and blood.\u201d<\/p>\n

FB friends might remember a recent post which linked to Steve’s \u00a0introduction<\/a><\/strong> to issue 24 (Winter 2012) of Arsenic Lobster<\/em>–it \u00a0is really something to read, and it will give you a sample of the kind of writing that distinguishes\u00a0Overpass Girl<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n
