Shades of Vermeer,<\/p>\n

the beauty of this young maid.<\/p>\n

Though, alas, her adornment seems to lack<\/p>\n

gemstone preciousness.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Never mind.\u00a0\u00a0 She treasures it<\/p>\n

saves it from jostling by festival crowds<\/p>\n

as she would have it shield her<\/p>\n

from portraiture.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She loves its green–just shy<\/p>\n

of emerald–<\/p>\n

that grants her a glimpse of fabled seas<\/p>\n

so far off they stretch belief.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sunlight winks from its taut skin<\/p>\n

and she fancies herself princess-rich<\/p>\n

freeze-framed<\/p>\n

lest the magic leak away.<\/p>\n

Carol Kanter’s<\/strong> first published poem appeared in Iowa Woman<\/em> (Spr\/Sum, 1995). She subsequently has had poems published in a number of literary magazines and anthologies, including \u00a0Ariel<\/em>, Atlanta Review<\/em>, Kaleidoscope Ink<\/em>, The Madison Review<\/em>, The Mid-America Poetry Review<\/em>, and Thema.<\/em> Finishing Line Press published her first chapbook, \u201c<\/em>Out of Southern Africa,\u201d in 2005, and her second, \u201c<\/em>Chronicle of Dog,\u201d<\/em> in 2006.<\/p>\n

Carol is a psychotherapist in private practice. She has a B.A. in biology, an M.A. in clinical social work, and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. Her book And Baby Makes Three<\/em> (Apocryphile Press, 2007) explores\u00a0the emotional transition to parenthood.<\/p>\n
