\"The<\/a>After participating in the Pop-Up Bookfair<\/strong> at The Empty Bottle<\/strong> <\/a>last Sunday, I think all bookfairs should be at a bar. It was great fun–the patrons and sellers got mellower as the music amped up.<\/p>\n

\"OV<\/a>To my right were Gina Frangello<\/strong> and Leah Tallon<\/strong> representing Other Voices Books<\/a><\/strong>. In addition to publishing books like \u00a0Currency<\/em> by Zoe Zolbrod and How to Hold a Woman<\/em> by Chicago\u2019s own Billy Lombardo<\/strong>, Other Voices <\/strong>will be holding its first summer writing workshop, Other Voices Queretaro<\/a><\/strong>, \u00a0July 5-14 \u00a0in Mexico\u2019s beautiful central highlands. Workshops in fiction and creative nonfiction will be taught by Pam Houston, Josip Novakovich and Rob Roberge.<\/p>\n

I shared a table with John Wawrzaszek <\/strong>and other writer\/artists from the\u00a0Chicago Zine Fest<\/a>. <\/strong>If you don’t\u00a0\u00a0know about Chicago Zine Fest, it is\u00a0an independent event creating an outlet for small press and independent publishers to showcase their work.The goal is to make DIY zine-making accessible, highlight the talents of self-published artists, and give independent artists a chance to interact, and swap skills through tabling, community events, and workshops. The next Chicago Zine Fest<\/strong> will be held March 8 and 9 <\/strong>at Columbia College.<\/p>\n

\"Chicago<\/a><\/p>\n

Also on hand were friends I had made at previous bookfairs such as Jason Pettus<\/strong> of Chicago Center for Literature and Photography\u00a0(CCLaP)<\/a>. \u00a0CCLaP’s <\/strong>books are one of a kind. \u00a0CCLaP\u2019s latest book is Famous Drownings in Literary History<\/strong><\/em>, Essays on 21st<\/sup> Century Jewishness by Kevin Haworth. <\/strong>I also wished congrats to\u00a0Moira Pujols<\/strong> whose Revista Contratiempo<\/a><\/em> just celebrated its 100th<\/sup> issue.<\/p>\n

\"Home\"<\/a>Catching my attention were a new literary magazine and a new poetry publisher. The magazine is related to food and is called Graze<\/a>, <\/strong><\/em>which describes itself this way:\u00a0“Graze<\/strong><\/em> is\u00a0a semi-annual literary magazine based in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood that focuses on what’s on the table as much as the folks sitting around it. We’re interested in the stories that food tells about us\u2014after all, our collective and individual human histories were nourished by the food that we made, smelled, ate, threw up, fucked up, and loved. Our audience will likely be people who are interested in reading about people\u2014and people who are interested in reading about food. This isn’t a Martha Stewart publication\u2014there will be no recipes, no tablescapes, no restaurant reviews. We’re not trying to commodify food; we’re trying to look at the ways food is in the background or foreground of politics, human relationships, locations, events, and so on.”<\/div>\n

Want to submit to Graze<\/strong><\/em>? Here’s what editors seeks: “We’d like you to contribute some literary scribbles to our project. This could be …\u00a0A piece of fiction\u2014humorous, serious, or not quite either;\u00a0a journalistic look at food politics;\u00a0a poem;\u00a0a play or scene;\u00a0a pseudo-scholarly look at food in literature, history, music, or film;\u00a0a creative non-fiction essay;\u00a0a weird, surprising thing that you put together.\u00a0We ask that written pieces be under 5,000 words.\u00a0Graze<\/strong><\/em> issue three deadline: December 20, 2012.<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\"Convulsive<\/a>The poetry publisher that caught my attention is Convulsive Editions<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0a micro-press that publishes affordable, well-designed chapbooks, broadsides, french folds, and other printed matter featuring lyrical writing that quakes and rattles. On hand at the table was Nathan Hoks<\/strong>, a poet whose book Reveilles <\/em>was put out by the London publisher Salt Publishing<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Music at the Bookfest was provided by Good Evening<\/a>, Wooden Wing<\/a>, and Mr. Mayor \u00a0& Highballers<\/a> <\/strong>who I particularly fell for since they performed my mother’s favorite song “Frankie and Johnny.”<\/strong><\/p>\n
