I first became familiar with Laura\u2019s work when we both had work in <em>Kiss Me Goodnight<\/em>.\u00a0 Her poem \u201cAddicted\u201d is in <strong><em>Solace in So Many Words<\/em><\/strong> and she has let me publish &#8220;If I Had a Horse&#8221;on this <a title=\"Laura Rodley If I Had a Horse\" href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/2011\/07\/if-i-had-a-horse-by-laura-rodley\/\" target=\"_blank\">website.<\/a> Last week I put out a call for submissions and Laura sent me three. \u00a0I am publishing this one today as it seems apt, weatherwise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Montague City Road<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tonight black river water shook hands<\/p>\n<p>with warm January clouds<\/p>\n<p>sending mists across roads<\/p>\n<p>blinding as snow blizzard<\/p>\n<p>visibility less than zero<\/p>\n<p>light bouncing off light.<\/p>\n<p>I passed by number 300,<\/p>\n<p>went eight houses beyond<\/p>\n<p>to the end of the road, unable<\/p>\n<p>to see any mailboxes,<\/p>\n<p>and then the angel<\/p>\n<p>on the seventh step<\/p>\n<p>cleared the path, come home now, at once<\/p>\n<p>so I drove behind cars<\/p>\n<p>blinking red lights<\/p>\n<p>at twenty miles an hour<\/p>\n<p>in a fifty-five miles per hour zone<\/p>\n<p>on Route 2, but I made<\/p>\n<p>it home and the angel<\/p>\n<p>reached out her wings for me<\/p>\n<p>unable to leave the seventh step<\/p>\n<p>her wing tips soothing my eyes,<\/p>\n<p>the frost on my hair.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a9 Laura Rodley\u00a0 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Author&#8217;s note: <\/strong>The Angel on the Seventh Step is taken from <em>Angela&#8217;s Ashes<\/em> by Frank McCourt.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to <strong><em>Your Front Wheel is Coming Loose<\/em><\/strong>, another chapbook <strong><em>Rappelling Blue Light<\/em><\/strong> has been published too.
