Today\u2019s post is all about submissions<\/strong>.\u00a0 I\u2019ve received three emails recently that may be of interest.<\/p>\n

The first news is from C. J. Laity<\/strong> of\u00a0Chicago Poetry Press, <\/strong>which\u00a0is pleased to announce its intention to publish Journal of Modern Poetry,<\/em> <\/strong>Volume 15 (JOMP<\/strong><\/em> 15), to be released in the spring of 2013.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Those selected for inclusion in the upcoming Journal of Modern Poetry<\/em> 15 publication will have a chance at a featured spot to read the selected poem on the main stage of the Chopin Theater in Wicker Park (in Chicago) on the evening of Wednesday, June 5, during a huge book release party for the publication.<\/p>\n

The Grand Prize for the poetry contest has been raised to whichever is greater, $250 or 20% of all entry fees.\u00a0One manuscript has already been chosen to receive a JOMP Book Award and ChicagoPoetry.com<\/strong> is still accepting and reviewing manuscripts into that category.\u00a0The JOMP 15 Poetry Contest<\/strong> deadline has been extended to\u00a0Sunday, May 5, 2013<\/strong>. This will be the FINAL<\/span> deadline and there will be no extensions. For complete guidelines and submission instructions please visit this\u00a0site<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Another email I received is from\u00a0Timothy Green<\/strong>, who is editor of\u00a0Rattle<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what he had to say:\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m writing for two reasons\u2014most importantly to make sure that everyone knows about our current call for submissions. Between now and\u00a0April 15th<\/sup><\/strong>, we want to see as many poems\u00a0written by Single Parents<\/strong> as possible for our Fall 2013 issue.\u00a0 The poems don\u2019t have to be\u00a0about<\/em> parenting, but simply must be written by those who identify as single parents.\u00a0 As always, the criteria is self-selecting; just be honest about how you feel.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve been a single parent for a time, but have since remarried, for example, that counts if you think it should.\u00a0 Joint custody counts if you think it should, and so on\u2014it\u2019s not our place to judge.\u00a0 \u2028\u2028We are also looking for personal narrative essays that\u00a0are<\/em> about parenting, and how it relates to and influences poetry.\u00a0 There\u2019s no length limit\u2014we just want to enjoy the read.\u2028\u2028We still have plenty of room in this issue, so if you have friends who are single parent poets, please help spread the word.\u00a0 To submit, all you have to do is follow our regular\u00a0guidelines<\/a> and mention that you are a single parent.<\/p>\n

I also received an email from Jen Cullerton Johnson<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 We were in Kiss Me Goodnight <\/strong><\/em>together and Jen has gone on to write the award-winning book Seeds of Change: The Wangari Maathai Story (Lee and Low)<\/em><\/strong>. In 2009, Jen \u00a0and Michelle Duster and Trina Sotira<\/strong><\/strong> formed \u00a0MuseWrite<\/strong> <\/a>a literary arts organization based in Chicago. \u00a0Here\u2019s the scoop on the anthology MuseWrite<\/strong> has planned:<\/p>\n

Alice Walker famously argued that a “woman is not a potted plant.” Whether we choose our paths or\u00a0plant our own “seeds of change,” women strive to fit in to the skin\u00a0we are\u00a0given. In our own words,\u00a0writers, teachers, and speakers share their stories of finding themselves through shifts–from great to small.<\/p>\n

We are seeking submissions for an anthology that will focus\u00a0on stories about major life shifts regarding unspoken needs, social change, community, and defining self.\u00a0This book will be written by and for women about change.<\/p>\n

Submissions can be short stories, essays, plays and poems.\u00a0 3,000 word maximum.\u00a0 Submit to musewritecommunity at yahoo<\/strong>.com<\/strong> by June 1. 2013.<\/p>\n
