
{"id":4908,"date":"2013-05-01T01:40:28","date_gmt":"2013-05-01T01:40:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/?p=4908"},"modified":"2013-05-01T01:53:35","modified_gmt":"2013-05-01T01:53:35","slug":"chicago-news-and-calls-for-submissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/2013\/05\/chicago-news-and-calls-for-submissions\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago news and calls for submissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STI_3506.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4909 alignleft\" title=\"STI_3506\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STI_3506-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>I haven\u2019t posted in a long while.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>We experienced some flooding in the early morning of April 18 and, at first, that took up all my time, then it compromised my Internet connection, and finally it left me a little overwhelmed, not because of loss of property or anything like that, but because I sometimes feel we are already flooded with messages, posts and updates, etc., and I wonder what value comes from another dribble in the stream.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>But now I am feeling less underwater and a little more buoyant, and able to share what\u2019s current in my world.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday April 14, I attended the Pop-Up Book Fair at The Empty Bottle in Chicago, and once again, it was a hoot.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Big thanks to the hosts: <strong>Curbside Splendor<\/strong> and <strong>The Chicago Writers House.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I shared a table with <strong>Cyndi Fehr<\/strong> and <strong>Brian J. Solem<\/strong> from <strong><em>Graze <\/em><\/strong>magazine, which is a newer literary magazine about food.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Based in Logan Square, <em>Graze<\/em> just came out with its third issue and describes itself as &#8220;a food-oriented lit mag dedicated to the food on your mind and the thoughts on your plate.&#8221; Check out the <a title=\"Graze Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grazemagazine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Graze <\/em>website<\/strong><\/a> to learn more and order your copy. <span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; font-weight: normal;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STD_3542.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4910\" title=\"STD_3542\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STD_3542-300x293.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STD_3542-300x293.jpg 300w, https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STD_3542-1024x1001.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STD_3542.jpg 1416w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the table next to me was <strong>Randy Richardson<\/strong> who serves as president of the 400-member group, <a title=\"Chicago Writers Association\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagowrites.org\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chicago Writers Association<\/strong><\/a> and is the author of two novels, <em><strong>Lost in the Ivy<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong><a title=\"Cheeseland\" href=\"http:\/\/cheeselandthebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cheeseland<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<strong> Chicago Writers Association<\/strong> is an organization you might want to investigate.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>I haven\u2019t started reading <em><strong>Cheeseland <\/strong><\/em>yet but I look forward to it as it is set in my era and is about something many of us flatlanders used to do when were teenagers, which is drive up to Wisconsin (where the drinking age limits are lower) to drink.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STJ_3548.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4912\" title=\"STJ_3548\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STJ_3548-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STJ_3548-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/STJ_3548-824x1024.jpg 824w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The other publication that caught my attention is an annual journal called <em><strong>The Labletter<\/strong><\/em>. Perfect-bound and printed on heavyweight stock, the journal features all types of writing (poetry, plays, essays, fiction) as well as art. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>I haven\u2019t started reading it yet, but it is beautiful and\u00a0 looks interesting. Make sure you check out the <a title=\"Chicago Center for Literature and Photography (CCLaP)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cclapcenter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CCLaP website <\/a>to find out about its many projects.\u00a0 He updates the site often and posts reviews, shows you the process of how he hand-makes the books and their covers, and features photographs.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"decoded aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-RoXKOOU2UVY\/Tjqu9vcfgcI\/AAAAAAAABUI\/o01qB0WjVS4\/s1600\/CCLAP.jpg\" alt=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-RoXKOOU2UVY\/Tjqu9vcfgcI\/AAAAAAAABUI\/o01qB0WjVS4\/s1600\/CCLAP.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"126\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Two other <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">amazing<\/span> people in Chicago publishing are <strong>Victor David Giron<\/strong> and <strong>Jacob Knabb<\/strong> of <strong>Curbside Splendor<\/strong>, the publishing company that keeps expanding its catalog, adding imprints, and scheduling great events.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span><strong>Curbside<\/strong> publishes journals and books, and has a number of imprints (<em>Another Chicago Magazine<\/em>, Artifice, Concepcion Press and Dark House Press) all doing interesting stuff. If you haven\u2019t already, you should check out the\u00a0 <a title=\"Curbside Splendor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.curbsidesplendor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Curbside Splendor website<\/strong><\/a> so you can keep up with the news and new titles and read its blog, which features graphic art as well as written posts.<a id=\"irc_mil\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" href=\"https:\/\/curbsidesplendorpublishing.submittable.com\/submit\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"irc_mi\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"margin-top: 112px;\" src=\"https:\/\/curbsidesplendorpublishing.submittable.com\/Public\/Skin\/2840\/2840.jpg?c=298169\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Calls for submissions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Two of my Facebook contacts have posted calls for submissions.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 17.0pt; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">For the Fall, 2013 issue, a special themed issue of <strong><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Hobble Creek Review<\/em><\/strong> will be guest edited by <strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Collin Kelley<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 23.0pt; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Hobble Creek Review<\/em> is a journal of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 23.0pt; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"><span class=\"text\">contemporary poetry and creative non-fiction<\/span><span class=\"text\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 17.0pt; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">Collin is looking for poems which hinge on pop culture.
