Happy Poetry Month! Harumph, harrumph.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the smack dab middle of the month, also our tax deadline day, and in Chicago, the landscape is once again clearing from a surprise snow shower (see Glimpse of Solace<\/strong><\/a>). I wanted to share some stuff with you.<\/p>\n

First, as I have before in this space, I recommend you drop in on Dave Bonta\u2019s<\/strong> <\/a> poetry blog, Via Negativa<\/strong><\/a>. A recent post is “National Poetry Day is a failure.” It will get you thinking. Dave links to the post “Against National Poetry Month As Such”<\/strong> by Charles Bernstein<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>As long as Dave brings up the Pulitzer Prizes<\/a> <\/strong>in his post, let me tell you the winner for a distinguished volume of original verse by an American author (receiving ten thousand dollars) is 3 Sections <\/strong><\/em>by Vijay Seshadri (Graywolf Press)<\/a><\/strong>. It is described as \u00a0\u201ca compelling collection of poems that examine human consciousness, from birth to dementia, in a voice that is by turns witty and grave, compassionate and remorseless. \u201c<\/p>\n

The finalists in this category were The Sleep of Reason<\/strong><\/em> by Morri Creech<\/strong> (The Waywiser Press), described as \u201cmasterly poems that capture the inner experience of a man in mid-life who is troubled by mortality and the passage of time,\u201d and The Big Smoke<\/strong><\/em> by Adrian Matejka<\/strong> (Penguin), described as an \u201cimaginative work by a commanding poet who engages the history and mythology of larger-than-life boxer Jack Johnson.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kathleen Kirk <\/strong>has six poems from her series on dancer Camille Claudel published in the latest issue of Menacing Hedge<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. They are graceful and poised and lithe.<\/p>\n

Chicago poet Donna Vorreyer<\/strong> (author of A House of Many Windows<\/strong><\/em> from Sundress Publications<\/a><\/strong>) participates in her publisher’s National Poetry Month playlist<\/a> by contributing a post on one of her favorite poets, Jack Gilbert<\/strong> and his books.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Do you get Winning Writers<\/em><\/strong><\/a> newsletter? If you do then you know that Arthur Powers <\/strong>is judging this year\u2019s Tom Howard\/John H. Reid Fiction contest<\/strong>. It\u2019s the contest he won in 2008. His book A Hero for the People <\/strong><\/em>went on to be published by Press 53<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0You can link to his story \u201cThe Bridge.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n
