Harumph, harrumph.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the smack dab middle of the month, also our tax deadline day, and in Chicago, the landscape is once again clearing from a surprise snow shower (see <a title=\"Glimpse of Solace: Spring Snow\" href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/2014\/04\/glimpse-of-solace-spring-snow\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Glimpse of Solace<\/strong><\/a>). I wanted to share some stuff with you.<\/p>\n<p>First, as I have before in this space, I recommend you drop in on <a title=\"Dave Bonta\" href=\"http:\/\/davebonta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dave Bonta\u2019s<\/strong> <\/a> poetry blog, <a title=\"Via Negativa National Poetry Month is a Failure\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vianegativa.us\/2014\/04\/national-poetry-month-is-a-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Via Negativa<\/strong><\/a>. A recent post is &#8220;National Poetry Day is a failure.&#8221; It will get you thinking. Dave links to the post <strong>&#8220;Against National Poetry Month As Such&#8221;<\/strong> by <a title=\"Against National Poetry Month As Suc bu Charles Bernstein\" href=\"http:\/\/www.press.uchicago.edu\/Misc\/Chicago\/044106.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Charles Bernstein<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/9781555976620.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6584\" title=\"9781555976620\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/9781555976620.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a>As long as Dave brings up the <strong><a title=\"Pulitzer Prize in poetry\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/citation\/2014-Poetry\" target=\"_blank\">Pulitzer Prizes<\/a> <\/strong>in his post, let me tell you the winner for a distinguished volume of original verse by an American author (receiving ten thousand dollars) is <em><strong>3 Sections <\/strong><\/em>by<strong> Vijay Seshadri <a title=\"Graywolf Press\" href=\"http:\/\/www.graywolfpress.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">(Graywolf Press)<\/a><\/strong>. It is described as \u00a0\u201ca compelling collection of poems that examine human consciousness, from birth to dementia, in a voice that is by turns witty and grave, compassionate and remorseless. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>The finalists in this category were <em><strong>The Sleep of Reason<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Morri Creech<\/strong> (The Waywiser Press), described as \u201cmasterly poems that capture the inner experience of a man in mid-life who is troubled by mortality and the passage of time,\u201d and <em><strong>The Big Smoke<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Adrian Matejka<\/strong> (Penguin), described as an \u201cimaginative work by a commanding poet who engages the history and mythology of larger-than-life boxer Jack Johnson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kathleen Kirk <\/strong>has six poems from her series on dancer Camille Claudel published in the latest issue of <a title=\"Menacing Hedge - Kathleen Kirk\" href=\"http:\/\/www.menacinghedge.com\/spring2014\/entry-kirk.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Menacing Hedge<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.
