\"\"<\/a>Happy Mother\u2019s Day. This past week, the <\/span>weather in Chicago has been extreme. Monday night we wore gloves. Thursday was in the 90s. The spring plants are late; some tulips just now blooming. The flowering trees are coming into their own.<\/p>\n

So far today\u2019s weather in Chicago is near perfect. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s the barometric pressure or allergies but I\u2019ve had a persistent dull headache; so there, that\u2019s one reason I haven\u2019t been keeping up with timely posts. But the main reason is my procrastination.<\/p>\n

Speaking of headaches, have you seen the most recent Poetry<\/em><\/strong><\/a>? If you have, then you\u2019ll probably guess I\u2019m referring to Caroline Bergvall\u2019s <\/strong>11-page poem from \u201cDrift.\u201d I was first alerted to it by FB friend Daniel Cleary.<\/strong> <\/span>When my copy of Poetry<\/strong><\/em> came in the mail, I sought out the poem. but I can\u2019t tell you what it\u2019s about because I didn’t read it.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t read the whole issue yet, but I did find much to admire in the poems (\u201cFor a Traveler\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cOn the Bus Someday\u201d<\/strong>) by Jessica Greenbaum<\/strong>. I wished I had written <\/span>this description from \u201cFor a Traveler:\u201d \u201cand I remember the garlic, each clove from its airmail \/ envelope brought to the cutting board, . . . .\u201d <\/span>I was in the narrator\u2019s head in \u201cOn the Bus Someday,\u201d her poem on lost friends: \u201cthe ones who left \/ through the hole of an argument decades ago, . . .\u201d<\/p>\n

Also in this issue is a review of The Complete Poems of James Dickey<\/strong><\/em> (\u201cReputation is a Funny Thing\u201d) by Michael Robbins<\/strong>, and I was struck by his phrase describing poetry: \u201cAll stark soul and overreach.\u201d<\/p>\n

While I\u2019m talking about recent publications, please note that Patty Somlo<\/strong> has a story (“The Applicant”<\/strong>)\u00a0 in WORK Literary Magazin<\/em>e<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>I have a poem (“Antic”<\/strong>) in Stymie<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mother\u2019s Day makes me think of my own mother and my mother-in-law and\u00a0 my sons. But I also think about Ann O\u2019Fallon<\/strong> and Margaret Vaillancourt <\/strong>the editors behind Kiss Me Goodnight<\/strong><\/em>, the book of writing by women who were girls when their mothers died. This year Margaret is particularly on my mind as she passed away seven months ago. Though I\u2019ve met her daughter Chelsea<\/strong>, I don\u2019t know her that well, but I can tell from our contact on FB that she still feels the fresh ache of loss. <\/span>My heart goes out to her.<\/p>\n

HBO <\/strong>is airing a documentary The (Dead Mothers) Club<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, featuring celebrity women who grew up without a mother. Two of the celebrities are Jane Fonda<\/strong> and Rosie O\u2019Donnell<\/strong>.\u00a0 Kiss Me Goodnight <\/em><\/strong>was published in 2005, the same year as Jane Fonda’s My Life So Far<\/em><\/strong> and she was on a book tour.\u00a0 Margaret was intent on getting a copy of Kiss Me Goodnight<\/strong><\/em> to her and succeeded, but nothing came of it. Similarly when I went to Minneapolis to participate in a reading Ann and Margaret had organized with Hope Edelman<\/strong>, I sat at Margaret\u2019s basement computer and sent an email to Rosie O\u2019Donnell<\/strong> who had a TV show then, but nothing came of it. <\/span>BTW, Hope Edelman\u2019s <\/strong>ground-breaking book Motherless Daughters: The Legacy of Loss <\/strong><\/em>celebrates its 20th anniversary and is being updated and re-issued in a third edition.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Motherless daughters. I had not heard the term until Kiss Me Goodnight <\/strong><\/em>came out. <\/span>Today I think of motherless daughters everywhere. I am so grateful that Ann and Margaret published my poem about my mother (\u201cAugust 1999: Light is a measure of time\u201d<\/strong><\/a>). The experience of being in their book was positive in so many ways.\u00a0 I hope that other people who have experienced the death of a loved one\u00a0 (motherless sons, fatherless children, and childless mothers) are able to find grief groups and outlets to express their feelings of loss.<\/p>\n

Speaking of anniversaries, tomorrow is the third anniversary <\/strong>of Solace in So Many Words<\/strong><\/em>. At this point, the promotion budget is long spent and its Amazon ranking approaches the two million mark. <\/span>It would be great to get a whole new wave of interest in the book. If\u00a0 you have read and enjoyed Solace in So Many Words<\/strong><\/em>, please consider posting a review on Goodreads or Amazon. <\/span>No pressure, though.<\/p>\n
