Reflected over and over<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">in the mirrored room you surround us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fits like a glove,&#8221; the seamstress says,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">then crowns you with flowers<\/p>\n<p>silk and braided pearls, a froth of veil<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">softens your wild, loose hair.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere in the shop your father waits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Since you asked him to come<\/p>\n<p>that he should see you this way<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">before the wedding.<\/p>\n<p>How wise of you to think of him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But he&#8217;s distracted now<\/p>\n<p>browsing in this sanctum of romance<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">among the marabou and satin<\/p>\n<p>garters and glittering inefficient purses<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">perfumes and flimsy negligees<\/p>\n<p>fake pearls and plumed pens, all that<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">until you call for him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He makes his way through a cumulus of gowns<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">floating from the ceiling, spectral<\/p>\n<p>lace and tulle brushing his cheeks as he passes<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the mirrored room you turn<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">for your father, spinning<\/p>\n<p>the room is full of you<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">he doesn&#8217;t know where to look.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a9 Fran Podulka, 1999<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This poem originally appeared in <strong><em>Willow Review<\/em><\/strong> (Spring 1999) and was reprinted in the <strong><em>Chicago Tribune<\/em><\/strong> on April 11, 2003 in honor of Poetry Month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fran Podulka<\/strong> writes fiction and poetry. Her novel <strong><em>The Wonder Jungle<\/em><\/strong> (Putnam, 1973) won awards from the Society of Midland Authors and Friends of Literature.\u00a0 Of it, <strong><em>Kirkus Reviews<\/em><\/strong> wrote, \u201cOne of those infrequent books with all the right instincts and a true touch &#8212; for anyone, any age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She has published a poetry collection <em><strong>Essentials<\/strong><\/em> (Lake Shore Publishing, 1989) and has had work in <em>Spoon River Poetry Review<\/em>, <em>Explorations<\/em>, <em>Snowy Egret<\/em> and many other publications.
