My wonderful writing group <strong>The Writers<\/strong> has started up again, and my Wednesdays are all about writing, my writing friends, and hearing and critiquing new work. So far <strong>Sharon Fiffer<\/strong> and <strong>Goldie Goldbloom<\/strong> have moderated.<\/p>\n<p>You may know <a title=\"Sharon Fiffer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sharonfiffer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sharon Fiffer<\/strong><\/a> from her mystery books (the J<strong>ane Wheel series<\/strong>), the anthologies she worked on with her husband <strong>Steve Fiffer<\/strong>, or from their Evanston writing workshops. Also, she&#8217;s let me share one of her blog posts (&#8220;Losing and Finding&#8221;)\u00a0 <a title=\"Losing and Finding by Sharon Fiffer\" href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/2014\/07\/sharon-fiffer-losing-and-finding\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>. When she came to The Writers a week ago she was excited because she just heard an essay of hers would run that night in <strong>Private Lives<\/strong>, part of the <strong>Opinionator blog<\/strong> of <em>The New York Times<\/em>. Then she learned it was also published in the paper; here is the link to<a title=\"Breaking my A.L.S. Promise.&#8221; <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/backstage-stuff-cover-198x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7184\" title=\"backstage-stuff-cover-198x300\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/backstage-stuff-cover-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a> I challenge you to read it.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Goldie Goldbloom wiki\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goldie_Goldbloom\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><a title=\"Goldie Goldbloom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goldiegoldbloom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Goldie Goldbloom<\/strong><\/a> is probably best known for her book <em><strong>The Paperbark Shoe<\/strong><\/em>. She&#8217;s also written <em>Toads&#8217; Museum of Freaks and Wonders<\/em> and<em> You Lose These<\/em>.\u00a0 Plus she&#8217;s had work in many literary magazines and recently she received a N<strong>ational Endowment for the Arts Fellowship<\/strong>. This summer she was in <strong>Menerbes, France<\/strong> as the recipient of the <a title=\"Dora Maar House fellowship\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mfah.org\/fellowships\/doramaarhouse\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dora Maar House Fellowship<\/strong><\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/9781921696404_PAPERBARKSHOE_BFORMAT.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7185\" title=\"9781921696404_PAPERBARKSHOE_BFORMAT\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/9781921696404_PAPERBARKSHOE_BFORMAT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a> She had a great experience there; I&#8217;ve got to say it sounds pretty terrific. Oui. Oui.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Recently announced were the <strong>poetry<\/strong> books and <strong>nonfiction<\/strong> books\u00a0 nominated\u00a0 for the <a title=\"National Book Award Nominees\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/nba2014.html#.VBoD1ufyvRY\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>National Book Awards<\/strong><\/a>&#8211;what do you think? If we had Ladbrokes running a betting pool, I would bet the poetry award will go to <strong>Ed Hirsch<\/strong> for his book <em><strong>Gabriel: A Poem<\/strong><\/em>, which he wrote\u00a0 after the death of his son. My heart goes out to anyone who has lost a child. For nonfiction books, <strong>Roz Chast <\/strong>is nominated for her memoir <em><strong>Can We Talk About Something More Pleasant?<\/strong><\/em> I have not read it entirely but I know I was enraptured with her feature in <em><strong>The New Yorker<\/strong><\/em>&#8211;you can see it <a title=\"Roz Chast The New Yorker Can We Talk About Something More Pleasant?\" href=\"http:\/\/projects.newyorker.com\/story\/chast-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/images-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7190 aligncenter\" title=\"images-1\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/images-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"85\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of <strong><em>The New Yorker<\/em><\/strong>, a poem that is making news appears in a recent issue. The poem <em><strong>&#8220;Japanese Maple&#8221; <\/strong><\/em> by <em><strong>Clive James<\/strong><\/em> who is terminally ill.\u00a0 It begins:<strong> &#8220;Your death, near now, is of an easy sort. \/So slow a fading out brings no real pain.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Read the whole poem <a title=\"Japanese Maple by Clive James\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2014\/09\/15\/japanese-maple\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>. This led me to thinking about the poem I would write about my own death, that is, if I had the chance. Would I face it with grace or would it be one long lamentation? I felt these lines of Clive James&#8217;s: <strong>&#8220;When did you ever see \/ So much sweet beauty as when fine rain falls \/On that small tree \/And saturates your brick back garden walls, So many Amber Rooms and mirror halls?&#8221; <\/strong>What about you &#8212; what would you write if you knew you were dying?<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/S-a3rsvXtL0UDm43yBO6StKi8L0bkRgeQWa47QU4pATZkJvp2OXZPkDrhrU50Oih1wfms85.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7187\" title=\"S-a3rsvXtL0UDm43yBO6StKi8L0bkRgeQWa47QU4pATZkJvp2OXZPkDrhrU50Oih1wfm=s85\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/S-a3rsvXtL0UDm43yBO6StKi8L0bkRgeQWa47QU4pATZkJvp2OXZPkDrhrU50Oih1wfms85.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"56\" height=\"85\" \/><\/a>Oh and one more thing. I just received the literary magazine <a title=\"Grist Journal\" href=\"http:\/\/gristjournal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Grist<\/strong><\/em>.<\/a> In it is\u00a0 a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\">most instructive essay<\/span><\/strong> by <strong>Maura Stanton &#8220;How to Be Subtle in Fiction by Being Bold.&#8221;<\/strong> She explains what the term &#8220;value&#8221; means in visual art, studies it in a Vermeer painting and notes, &#8220;There&#8217;s subtle meaning conveyed in those contrasting values&#8221; and then wonders: &#8220;Could I find values at work in art made out of words as well as art made out of paint.&#8221;\u00a0 She examines\u00a0 a haiku, a novella from 1926, a contemporary fiction piece. Now that I&#8217;m writing about it, I want to read it again; maybe more of it will soak in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So that&#8217;s everything I could think of to share.
