\"\"<\/a>Yesterday on the local talk show from Chicago, Windy City Live<\/em>, I heard it\u2019s almost been the coldest average February in Chicago since the late 1800s or something\u2014we\u2019re only missing it by a degree or two.\u00a0 It\u2019s a record I don\u2019t care if we break.<\/p>\n

Ambivalence \u2013 it\u2019s a quality I am trying to develop, especially as it applies to wanting something too much. Well, at least that\u2019s what I think this morning. That\u2019s because last night I read Amy Poehler\u2019s<\/strong> book Yes Please <\/em><\/strong>and in the chapter \u201cTreat Your Career Like a Bad Boyfriend,\u201d she writes: \u201cTry to care less. Practice ambivalence. Learn to let go of wanting it. Treat your career like a bad boyfriend.\u201d <\/strong> So I will try to focus on the creative aspect of writing and less so on the career aspect, but it is difficult. I \u00a0feel like readers complete the artistic endeavor of writers \u2013 they are the final step in the process.<\/p>\n

The other thing I am working on lately is to not be all judge-y<\/a>. Recently I have seen posts on Facebook and Twitter and heard remarks in conversations that could be considered a little \u201ctectchy.\u201d\u00a0 So, I am trying not to judge anyone, including the judgers. But, it is not always easy to bite my tongue.\u00a0 A critical mind is part of human nature.<\/p>\n

Solace in So Many Words <\/em><\/strong>contributors have been busy. I opened my email to find Donna Hilbert<\/strong>‘s poem “Peninsula”<\/strong><\/a> about her home of Long Beach, CA,<\/strong> for Silver Birch<\/strong> Press<\/strong><\/em>, as part of its “Where I Live Poetry and Photography Series.”<\/p>\n

Patty Somlo <\/strong>has a new story “The Argument”<\/strong><\/a> online in issue 75 of Arlington Literary Journal<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Susan Mahan <\/strong>is coming to Chicago to read at the launch of Shifts<\/strong><\/em>. It is a new book from Muse Write<\/strong><\/a> called Shifts: An Anthology of Women’s Growth Through Change <\/strong><\/em>by Michelle Duster<\/strong> and Trina Sotira <\/strong>with Jen Cullerton Johnson<\/strong>.\u00a0 BTW, Jen Cullerton Johnson, Susan Mahan, and I all has work in Kiss Me Goodnight<\/em> <\/strong>way back when.<\/strong> The launch is later in March — I’ll keep you posted.<\/p>\n

Kathleen Aguero<\/strong> has a poem “Send Off” <\/strong><\/a>in Column 517 of American Life in Poetry<\/strong><\/em> (which is the online project for newspapers by US Poet Laureate Ted Kooser<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

As I have mentioned before, Daniel Chacon<\/strong> has a radio show Words on a Wire<\/strong><\/em> on KTED El Paso, TX, and he recently replayed his interview with Philip Levine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Chicago poet and publisher C. J. Laity<\/strong> is looking for submissions<\/a> for his latest Journal of Modern Poetry (JOMP)<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 the theme is Peace.<\/p>\n

A great source for Chicago are poets is Highland Park Poetry<\/strong><\/a>, which is run by Jennifer Dotson<\/strong>. Do have poetry on Transportation or Food? Check it out.<\/p>\n

Friend to SISMW<\/em> Ellen T. McKnight<\/strong> just opened her website <\/a>(“Connecting through story”) for business where she’ll write about books and writing.<\/p>\n
