I write this to myself as well as to you.<\/p>\n<p>No whining. I\u2019ve been watching <strong><em>Foyle\u2019s War<\/em><\/strong> on Netflix and really enjoying it. It very rarely hits the wrong note; I\u2019ve watched two seasons and only had some quibbles with the series. It\u2019s been making me think of the sacrifices made at that time (1940s), wondering whether modern society could soldier on so.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s news I know. First off, big congrats to <strong>Ellen Bass<\/strong> who is nominated for a <a title=\"LAMBDA nominations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lambdaliterary.org\/features\/news\/03\/04\/the-27th-annual-lambda-literary-award-finalists\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>LAMBDA Award <\/strong><\/a>for her latest book, <em><strong>Like a Beggar <\/strong><\/em>(Copper Canyon Press).\u00a0 Her poem <strong>&#8220;The Orange-and-White High-Heeled Shoes&#8221;<\/strong> appears in latest issue of <a title=\"poem by Ellen Bass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/03\/30\/the-orange-and-white-high-heeled-shoes\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>The New Yorker<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patty Somlo<\/strong> has a short story <a title=\"Somlo story\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hamiltonstone.org\/hsr32fiction.html#somlo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>&#8220;Photographs of a Cemetery&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> in issue #32 of The Hamilton Stone Review<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Constantine McConnell<\/strong> has a poem <strong>&#8220;Strike&#8221; <\/strong>in a new magazine called <a title=\"The Fable\" href=\"http:\/\/issuu.com\/thefable\/docs\/issue_1_march_2015?e=15354851%2F11641151\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>The Fable<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arthur Powers<\/strong> has a new chapbook <em><strong>Edgewater <\/strong><\/em>that will be out from <a title=\"Arthur Powers\" href=\"https:\/\/finishinglinepress.com\/product_info.php?products_id=2313\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Finishing Line Press<\/strong><\/a> in June.<strong> Arthur<\/strong> is also involved in a judging capacity in <strong>Winning Writers Tom Howard \/ John H. Reid Fiction and Essay Contest<\/strong> \u2013 here is the <a title=\"Winning Writers contest\" href=\"https:\/\/winningwriters.com\/our-contests\/tom-howard-john-h-reid-fiction-essay-contest\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/f33ff9_9501a8c36c9246a49aae1789b78b6a05.jpg_srz_p_333_521_75_22_0.50_1.20_0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8050\" title=\"Twelve_front_cover.indd\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/f33ff9_9501a8c36c9246a49aae1789b78b6a05.jpg_srz_p_333_521_75_22_0.50_1.20_0-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Last weekend I went to three literary events.\u00a0 Thursday night I celebrated with <a title=\"Mary Driver-Thiel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marydriverthiel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mary Driver-Thiel<\/strong> <\/a>at the launch of her second novel, <em><strong>Twelve Thousand Mornings<\/strong><\/em> at Lake Forest Book Store.<\/p>\n<p>Friday night I went to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.highlandparkpoetry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Highland Park Poetry <\/strong><\/a>event featuring <strong>Gail Goepfert <\/strong>who read from her new chapbook <a href=\"https:\/\/finishinglinepress.com\/product_info.php?products_id=2207\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>A Mind on Pain<\/em><\/strong> <\/a>(Finishing Line).\u00a0 Also, Gail&#8217;s photograph is the cover of the latest issue of <em><strong>Rattle<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/585Goepfert_Gail_COV.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8051\" title=\"585Goepfert_Gail_COV\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/585Goepfert_Gail_COV.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/ccR47.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8059\" title=\"ccR47\" src=\"https:\/\/solaceinabook.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/ccR47.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Saturday I was at<strong> Oak Park Library<\/strong> for a Women\u2019s History Month Celebration of Women\u2019s Strength co-hosted by<a title=\"MuseWrite\" href=\"http:\/\/www.musewrite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><strong><a title=\"MuseWrite\" href=\"http:\/\/www.musewrite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MuseWrite Press<\/a> <\/strong>and <a title=\"Mahogany\" href=\"http:\/\/mahoganysheritage.zenfolio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mahogany Heritage Foundation<\/strong><\/a>. Featured were writers whose work appears in <em><strong>Shifts An Anthology of Women\u2019s Growth Through Change<\/strong><\/em>, edited by <strong>Michelle Duster<\/strong> and <strong>Trina Sotira<\/strong> (with <strong>Jen Cullerton Johnson<\/strong>.\u00a0 Eight of the 35 contributors read from their work (essay, fiction, poetry) and covered many heartfelt subjects such as hairstyle and self, mothering, learning the subtleties of language, and a shocking realization in Tiergarden.\u00a0 <strong>Susan Mahan<\/strong> came from Boston to read her poem <strong>&#8220;In My Next Life.&#8221;<\/strong> Susan and I have two literary connections (<em><strong>Kiss Me Goodnight<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>SISMW<\/em><\/strong>) and she invited me to the event. So glad she did.\u00a0 I enjoyed hearing all the women and look forward to reading the book. Plus, we got to spend some time together.
