Toomey and Susan Mahan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Game Face Too<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t realize<br \/>\nhow long he&#8217;d been<br \/>\nwearing it<br \/>\nuntil it was too late.<br \/>\nMom didn&#8217;t believe the oncologist.<br \/>\nShe said Dad must have been poisoned.<\/p>\n<p>Until he outgrew it,<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t realize how long<br \/>\nhe&#8217;d been wearing it &#8211;<br \/>\nfor all of us.<\/p>\n<p>Dad left his game face behind.<br \/>\nSometimes, I try it on for size.<br \/>\nSometimes,<br \/>\nits the only thing that<br \/>\nfits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bonnie J. Here\u2019s a link to her <a href=\"http:\/\/bonniejtoomey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Night and Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My father wore pressed white shirts and bow ties.<br \/>\nHe buffed his leather shoes to a high shine.<br \/>\nHe was serious, thoughtful and polite,<br \/>\ndrawing on his pipe to consider his words.<br \/>\nDad wouldn\u2019t say horseshit<br \/>\nif he was standing in a pile of it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My grandfather had the deepest dimples and a twinkle in his eye.<br \/>\nHe chewed tobacco and kept a spit jar in his pocket.<br \/>\nSometimes Papa Matt wore his pajamas<br \/>\nthe whole time we were there.<br \/>\nNana was always mad at him and giving him a look.<br \/>\nPapa Matt had a raspy Irish brogue,<br \/>\nand he cackled at his own stories.<br \/>\nHis speech was peppered with occasional curses<br \/>\nand words like hoodwink and malarky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dad bought my sisters and me valentines every year,<br \/>\nsigning Love, Dad in his meticulous left-handed cursive.<br \/>\nHe told us stories about World War II on our daytime walks<br \/>\nand Aesop\u2019s fables at bedtime.<br \/>\nHe taught me that life was tough sometimes,<br \/>\nbut that you could get through it if you did the right thing.<br \/>\nMy little sister said his stories were boring,<br \/>\nand she didn\u2019t understand<br \/>\nwhat \u201cslow and steady wins the race\u201d meant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sometimes I forgot what Dad was talking about<br \/>\nif he paused too long in thought,<br \/>\nbut I had decided that my father and I were tortoises.<br \/>\nMy sister was a hare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Papa Matt thought it was important to pay attention<br \/>\nand to keep the upper hand.<br \/>\nHis standing advice was to<br \/>\nanswer the door with a hat and coat on.<br \/>\nIf it was someone you liked,<br \/>\nyou could say you had just gotten home;<br \/>\nif not, you could say you were on your way out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Papa Matt taught me to be skeptical.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dad taught me to believe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Susan Mahan \u00a9 November 2001<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Susan Mahan<\/strong> has been writing poetry since her husband died in 1997. She is a frequent reader at poetry venues, including the Boston Public Library and the Catbird Caf\u00e9 in Weymouth. She has self-published four chap books, including, \u201cMissing Mum\u201d 2005, and \u201cWorld View\u201d 2009. She joined the editorial staff of <em>The South Boston Literary Gazette<\/em> in 2002.
