The feeling was intensified this weekend when I attended iBAM!<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> the festival of Irish Books and Music<\/strong> at the Irish American Heritage Center<\/a><\/strong>.\"btn-ibam\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Mary Pat Kelly<\/a><\/strong> spoke about her books, Galway Bay,<\/strong><\/em> and especially the latest Of Irish Blood<\/strong><\/em>. She said she learned from the McCourt brothers to talk about her book, rather than read from it. She also led the audience in song. And at one point, we all crossed out fingers in hope that her books would be optioned for television.<\/p>\n

\"9497617_orig\"<\/a>Judy Lee Burke\u2019s<\/strong> <\/a>Blackrock<\/strong><\/em> is a thriller that encompasses both Ireland\u2019s racing world and Mexico\u2019s drug cartel.<\/p>\n

Maryrose Carroll<\/strong> is a sculptor who has turned to writing, and she related stories from her book Beats Me<\/strong><\/em>, which is about her husband, well-known Chicago poet Paul Carroll<\/strong>. If you’d like to hear firsthand about her book, you can listen to her interview with SISMW<\/strong> <\/em>friend Rick Kogan<\/strong> on his October 7 AfterHours<\/strong> show<\/a> on\u00a0 WGN Radio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Just this morning in my email I received info on a poetry contest that could get you to Ireland. It’s the 2016 Gregory O’Donoghue International Poetry Competition<\/strong> <\/a>sponsored by the Munster Literature Centre<\/strong>. The deadline is November 30. The winner will attend the Cork Spring Literary Fest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
