My Internet connection has been wonky lately, suffering fits and starts. So I didn&#8217;t want to do a post with lots of links because it would take forever to write and post. But since I have a poem with the subtitle &#8220;Taxonomy,&#8221; I&#8217;ll post that instead.\u00a0 In 2003, it was awarded second place in The Twenty-Fifth Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards, sponsored by the Evanston Public Library.\u00a0 <strong>Peace, love, and solace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to know (Taxonomy)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hard to believe.<br \/>\nWhile the doctor spoke,<br \/>\nshe scanned her scant knowledge of microbiology:<br \/>\nrods and spheres and spirochetes.<br \/>\nFlashed to the boss who summed up<br \/>\nthe world as inhabited by<br \/>\nfoxes or pigs. Either you were<br \/>\na fox or you were a pig. For a while<br \/>\nin the bar after the Christmas party,<br \/>\nthey categorized all their co-workers<br \/>\nand she argued there were also cows and sheep.<br \/>\nAfter they nailed it down<br \/>\nto the mailroom clerk, they grew quiet,<br \/>\nfox or pig.<br \/>\nShe feared he might make a pass.<br \/>\nDid it all come down to that?<br \/>\nRod, sphere, spirochete.<br \/>\nFox or pig,<br \/>\nsmoking or non.<\/p>\n<p>A contractor once told her,<br \/>\nwhen it came to door handles,<br \/>\nmen like knobs, women like latches.<br \/>\nKnobs and latches.<\/p>\n<p>On the drive down the boulevard,<br \/>\ngreat grammy says, \u201cI\u2019ve never given such notice<br \/>\nto trees before. They\u2019re so green,<br \/>\nso lush this year. That one is square.\u201d<br \/>\nPerhaps you cannot see the trees<br \/>\nfor the leaves: oval, palmate,<br \/>\nlinear, reniform, cuneate, acerose,<br \/>\norbicular, hastate, spatulate.<\/p>\n<p>Columbia River Valley waterfalls<br \/>\nare typed: plunge, horsetail,<br \/>\nfan, tier, block, cascade,<br \/>\nsegments, and punchbowl.<br \/>\n\u201cWouldn\u2019t you like to be water?\u201d asks her son,<br \/>\n\u201cYou could fall and tumble and never get hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spatulate and spirochete.<br \/>\nFox and horsetail.<br \/>\nRegular or decaf.<\/p>\n<p>You may discriminate the seven types<br \/>\nof snowflakes: plates, stars,<br \/>\ncolumns, needles, spatial dendrites, capped<br \/>\ncolumns, irregular crystals.<br \/>\nOr perhaps you look at the larger picture<br \/>\nand see snow in dunes or sastrugi.<\/p>\n<p>Palmate and plunge<br \/>\nSpirochete and dendrite.<br \/>\nPlain or peanut.<\/p>\n<p>A favorite poem discusses diamond<br \/>\ncuts: pear, heart, oval, emerald,<br \/>\nradiant, baguette, trillion, quadrillion<br \/>\nmarquise, Old European,<br \/>\nand American Standard Brilliant.<\/p>\n<p>How to know. What<br \/>\nkind, sort, type, class, division?<br \/>\nSo many different,<br \/>\nso much the same.<br \/>\nMaybe it comes to this:<br \/>\nTwo kinds of people,<br \/>\nthose who divide the world<br \/>\nand those who don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Forest or trees.<br \/>\nSpatulate or spirochete.
