It is each and every<br \/>\nday that is the present.<\/p>\n<p>But the everyday is a gift too,<br \/>\nwrapped in plain paper<br \/>\naddressed in Papermate blue,<br \/>\nleft at the doorstep, bound in time and string<br \/>\nnear the mat, common as dirt and dust,<br \/>\nordinary as tap water,<br \/>\neasy to miss.<\/p>\n<p>When you return to the table<br \/>\nit may have taken your place<br \/>\n\u2014look before you sit. It travels<br \/>\nwith you in the car, built in better<br \/>\nthan cup holders, and you can see it<br \/>\nout your windshield\u2014big sky<br \/>\ncountry and rainy day commuting<br \/>\nbroken shoelaces and loose teeth,<br \/>\nsalty as canned soup<br \/>\nand just as unmemorable<br \/>\nunless you have specific recall of the mundane,<br \/>\nall happenstance and chicken fingers.<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t be special<br \/>\nto get a gift everyday&#8211;what greedy<br \/>\nchildren we\u2019d be. No matter;<br \/>\nit waits for you like clothes<br \/>\nand tags along after breakfast<br \/>\nlike a balloon from the shoe store,<br \/>\nor the toilet paper streaming from your heel,<br \/>\nconstant companion, sometimes making you self conscious<\/p>\n<p>A gift. A prize. A favor<br \/>\ncheap as the tchotchke in the Cracker Jack box.<br \/>\nand cute as Monopoly\u2019s Scottie dog<br \/>\nsuccinct as a vanity plate<br \/>\nor wise as the bubblegum fortune.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the balled tissue in the toes of new shoes,<br \/>\nremarkable only when you put your foot in.<br \/>\nOr it\u2019s a bitter process, all hard work<br \/>\nand irritation, comforting as an I-told-you-so<br \/>\niridescent like a pearl, tough as gristle, and<br \/>\ndirty as a root vegetable.<br \/>\nAfter all, some gifts we\u2019d like to return.<\/p>\n<p>But whether it is as vexing as catsup,<br \/>\nfrivolous as confetti,<br \/>\nor hard and gleaming like the cold comfort<br \/>\nwe get from still being alive, it is<br \/>\nright here: not to be denied,<br \/>\nlike the streamer that announces<br \/>\n\u201csanitized for your protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, everyday is a gift.<br \/>\nUnwrap it carefully<br \/>\nand save the paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a9 Ellen Wade Beals, 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This poem appeared in <strong><em>Verse Wisconsin<\/em><\/strong>, Issue 111, April 2013.
