Hunger<\/strong><\/p>\n

Does the maple leaf hunger
\nfor the sun, shaking hands with its light,
\nthe light that turns the maples\u2019 leaves
\nto rusty orange, heavy with color,
\nso heavy they drop?<\/p>\n

Does the cardinal hunger
\nfor its mate, how they are never
\nmore than twenty feet away from each other,
\nthe wind of their flight, attaining bird seeds or shelter,
\nso close they thrive?<\/p>\n

Do the deer hunger for acorns,
\nremembering the buttery taste of those already eaten,
\nor do they step forward each bite
\nin wonder, crunch the nut open,
\nso many they live,<\/p>\n

and does the stream bed hunger
\nfor water, thirsty even for evening\u2019s dew,
\nthe dew that caresses its silt, changes
\nit from grey mud to black, evaporates,
\nso even the frost is hungry?<\/p>\n

Laura Rodley\u2019s<\/strong> work has been nominated numerous times for the Pushcart Prize and Best of Net anthologies. In 2013 Laura was awarded the Pushcart Prize (for her poem “Resurrection,” <\/strong><\/a>which originally appeared in The New Verse News<\/strong><\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n

She has two chapbooks from Finishing Line Press: Your Left Front Wheel is Coming Loose,<\/strong><\/em> which Finishing Line nominated for a PEN L.L.Winship Award, and Rappelling Blue Light<\/strong><\/em>, which was a Massachusetts Book Award nominee.<\/p>\n

Former co-curator of the Collected Poets Series, Laura teaches As You Write It classes; she has edited and published As You Write It, A Franklin County Anthology <\/strong><\/em>volumes I-V, which was nominated for a Massachusetts Book Award. She has also been featured reader at Greenfield Word Festival since its conception.<\/p>\n

She is also a free lance writer. You can read her stories \u201cLlamas at the Big E\u201d<\/strong><\/a> and \u201cCentennial at the Big E\u201d<\/strong><\/a> at Country Folks<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n
