Overloaded, I won&#8217;t add to the mix.\u00a0 Which leaves me wondering what to post. I had something in mind but it&#8217;ll have to wait until next time. I&#8217;m hosting <strong>Thanksgiving<\/strong> and running out of time. I present you with my poem <strong>&#8220;Overlook,&#8221;<\/strong> which originally appeared in <strong><em>The Stony Thursday Book<\/em><\/strong>, a Collection of Contemporary Poetry, (No. 8, Autumn 2009), edited by <strong>Ciaran O&#8217;Driscoll, <\/strong>and published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerick.ie\/council\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Arts Office of Limerick City Council<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>BTW, in case you missed it, I posted a poem (&#8220;<strong>Never marry a writer&#8221;<\/strong>)\u00a0 about <strong>NaNoWriMo<\/strong> on <em><strong>Medium<\/strong><\/em>&#8211;you can check it out <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@weighedwords\/its-nanowrimo-is-this-poem-about-you-8d82920be5db#.y17o4gt65\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peace, love. and solace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overlook<\/strong><br \/>\nHalloween tomorrow<br \/>\nand the gerbera daisy<br \/>\nplanted in May makes<br \/>\nits first appearance\u2014<br \/>\nI think I\u2019ll write a poem<br \/>\nabout it, how for some of us<br \/>\nit is almost too late when<br \/>\nwe decide to bloom<br \/>\nlike this gerbera daisy<br \/>\nfacing the faint light, heedless,<br \/>\njust like Aesop\u2019s cricket.<\/p>\n<p>Next day the frost doesn\u2019t<br \/>\ncome and the poem doesn\u2019t either<br \/>\nand that gerbera daisy, its pink head held high,<br \/>\nblooms, flattening its petals for full-face exposure.<br \/>\nI pull dead impatiens and coleus from<br \/>\nthe pot and the daisy stands straighter,<br \/>\nspreads it green dandelion-like leaves.<br \/>\nAnother one peeps from below,<br \/>\ncharmed like a snake dancing,<br \/>\nand the poem is about second chances;<br \/>\nhow it\u2019s better to have one week in November<br \/>\nthan none at all&#8211;the whole<br \/>\nbetter to have loved and lost thing<br \/>\nwithout the love part, with just the part about<br \/>\nhard scrabble existence in a clay pot.<br \/>\nSometimes it works out okay,<br \/>\nthat\u2019s what the poem would say,<br \/>\nblithe and happy as one can be considering death.<\/p>\n<p>Veterans Day and the two daisies<br \/>\nseem happy as weeds.<br \/>\nA ladybug I flick off the edge of the pot<br \/>\ndoes not fly away but arcs to the deck with gravitas.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll take the flower in, I think,<br \/>\nre-plant it to winter in my temperate home.<br \/>\nFirst I\u2019ll decontaminate it in the garage<br \/>\nthen re-pot it, and it\u2019ll soldier on.<\/p>\n<p>Now the poem is about how sometimes<br \/>\nwe need to be rescued and sometimes we are.<br \/>\nThe plant will flourish as the family\u2019s floral pet;<br \/>\nmaybe this should be like a children\u2019s tale&#8211;<br \/>\nThe Little Engine, The Ugly Duckling,<br \/>\nThe Castaway Toy\u2014happy endings all.<\/p>\n<p>Every time I park my car I remind<br \/>\nmyself to take care of that plant.<br \/>\nBut there\u2019s never any time<br \/>\nand soon it withers between<br \/>\nits dismal companions: a bag of charcoal and gardening shoes.<br \/>\nCome Christmas, I need room to hide the presents<br \/>\nand store the party supplies, so I do one last cleanup<br \/>\nand unceremoniously dump the pot<br \/>\ninto the closest patch of earth.<br \/>\nThe soil is a clump of roots<br \/>\nand drainage stones, and the empty pot<br \/>\ngoes on the shelf with the others&#8211;<br \/>\nits space on the floor now taken up<br \/>\nby a six of Stella.<\/p>\n<p>This poem is more likely now, more like life.<br \/>\nThe plant got a couple days in the sun&#8211;<br \/>\nnot enough&#8211;and the promise of something better&#8211;<br \/>\nnot fulfillment&#8211;and it ends up dead and recycled;<br \/>\na plot that is truer to the organic nature of<br \/>\nof any plant\u2019s story.
