\"Hibiscus<\/a>Hello.<\/strong> September is well upon us (halfway over tomorrow). How have you been?<\/p>\n

My thoughts are with all those who have been affected by the recent hurricanes and those who have been living in smoke-filled and dangerous places due to all the wild fires.<\/p>\n

When the news gets to be too much, I never know what to write in this space. Before these catastrophes, I was trying to think about the general topic of cynicism, but I am still thinking. We\u2019ll see whether I can draft anything cogent to present here.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile I haven\u2019t blogged in a while and I wanted to share something so I looked up public domain poems to accompany the marigold photographs below. I am interested in re-discovering \u201cold\u201d poetry that sounds contemporary. First I found \u201cMarigolds\u201d<\/strong> by Robert Graves<\/strong> (here\u2019s the link<\/strong><\/a>); but as luck would have it I stumbled on his poem \u201cMr. Philosopher\u201d<\/strong> and I found it more appealing.<\/p>\n

I love the second to last line \u2013 it shakes up everything and makes us all overtired children.\u00a0 Here’s wishing you fun.<\/p>\n

Peace, love, and solace,<\/strong><\/p>\n

Old Mr. Philosopher
\nComes for Ben and Claire,
\nAn ugly man, a tall man,
\nWith bright-red hair.<\/p>\n

The books that he\u2019s written
\nNo one can read.
\n\u201cIn fifty years they\u2019ll understand:
\nNow there\u2019s no need.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll that matters now
\nIs getting the fun.
\nCome along, Ben and Claire;
\nPlenty to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then old Philosopher,
\nWisest man alive,
\nPlays at Lions and Tigers
\nDown along the drive\u2014<\/p>\n

Gambolling fiercely
\nThrough bushes and grass,
\nMaking monstrous mouths,
\nBraying like an ass<\/p>\n

Twisting buttercups
\nIn his orange hair,
\nHopping like a kangaroo,
\nGrowling like a bear.<\/p>\n

Right up to tea-time
\nThey frolic there.
\n\u201cMy legs are wingle,\u201d
\nSays Ben to Claire.<\/p>\n
