I&#8217;ve started my shopping, put up lights outside, but haven&#8217;t yet gotten my Christmas tree or decorated the inside of my house. I&#8217;ve been lackadaisical and uninspired, spending time doing crosswords, catching up on past issues of <em>The New Yorker,<\/em> and reading mysteries (<strong><em>Glass Houses<\/em> <\/strong>by <strong>Louise Penny<\/strong> and <strong><em>The White Trilogy<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Ken Bruen<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m slow to get in the spirit this year.\u00a0 It seems I am still in a November frame of mine so it figures that I&#8217;d post the poem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poets.org\/poetsorg\/poem\/november-1\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>&#8220;November&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poets.org\/poetsorg\/poet\/elizabeth-drew-stoddard\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth Drew Stoddard<\/a>.\u00a0 Peace, love, and solace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>November<\/strong><br \/>\nMuch have I spoken of the faded leaf;<br \/>\nLong have I listened to the wailing wind,<br \/>\nAnd watched it ploughing through the heavy clouds,<br \/>\nFor autumn charms my melancholy mind.<\/p>\n<p>When autumn comes, the poets sing a dirge:<br \/>\nThe year must perish; all the flowers are dead;<br \/>\nThe sheaves are gathered; and the mottled quail<br \/>\nRuns in the stubble, but the lark has fled!<\/p>\n<p>Still, autumn ushers in the Christmas cheer,<br \/>\nThe holly-berries and the ivy-tree:<br \/>\nThey weave a chaplet for the Old Year\u2019s bier,<br \/>\nThese waiting mourners do not sing for me!<\/p>\n<p>I find sweet peace in depths of autumn woods,<br \/>\nWhere grow the ragged ferns and roughened moss;<br \/>\nThe naked, silent trees have taught me this,\u2014<br \/>\nThe loss of beauty is not always loss!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elizabeth Drew Stoddard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This poem appeared in <em>Poems <\/em>(Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1895).
