Last days to celebrate National Short Story Month and win a book

05/30/2011 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Weighed Words is participating in The Collection Giveaway Project, which has been organized By Erika Dreifus at Fiction Writers Review. I found out about it from Dan Wickett of Emerging Writers Network. Like the other participating publishers, Weighed Words will give away a book of short stories. We chose Bluebirds Used to Croon in the Choir by Joe Meno because Joe is also a contributor to Solace in So Many Words. As a bonus, a copy of Solace in So Many Words will also … [Read more...]

J. Scott Smith

05/29/2011 By Ellen Beals 3 Comments

I have been a fan of J. Scott Smith's work since I first read it, and this story will show you why.  Originally published in 2009 in a now defunct electronic journal (Pocket Review), "Lynlee Floats" is published here to rescue it from cyberspace obscurity.  J. Scott Smith is a musician and writer from Wilmette, IL, and has published nonfiction articles and stories and is at work on a novel.   LYNLEE FLOATS Lynlee floats on her back in the club pool, the … [Read more...]

"Alleys" by Michael Constantine McConnell, which appears on page 140 of Solace in So Many Words, is filled with compelling characters so when I heard there were other published pieces on this family, I immediately read them, and wanted to share them.  "King of the Gypsies" appeared in Blood & Honey Review and "Field Trip" was published in The Cleveland Review. Here, Michael shares "Elegy for Gus,"which was originally published in Conte-- it is a sestina combining … [Read more...]

Short story collection giveaway–you could win!

05/20/2011 By Ellen Beals 2 Comments

I will get better at posting every day. Lately the blog has been taking a backseat to my other duties as publisher, like working on the e-book and planning the launch and readings of Solace in So Many Words. But I can be remiss no longer, and I will now update the information on The Collection Giveaway contest, and since I missed about twenty posts, I will give you twenty reasons that show short stories are the bomb. Here's the skinny: Weighed Words is celebrating May as … [Read more...]

Solace in So Many Words got a terrific write-up in ForeWord Reviews. Reviewer Chris Fisher called  the book ”a beautiful quilt of essays, stories, and poems.”  As always, my thanks goes to the contributors for letting me use their material. Here's a highlight: "There are two common threads that tie together the book's contributed pieces. First, each writer dares to bear his or her soul in an honest, sometimes brutally revealing manner. Second, the quality or artfulness of … [Read more...]
