Show and Tell For Grownups

05/29/2020 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Hello. I’m checking in to say hi, wondering how you all are faring. It seems to me everyone is anxious these days and maybe depressed and angry too. Keep heart. Here’s a new diversion for you. My friend Sharon Fiffer and her husband Steven Fiffer, both well-known Evanston writers, recently started STORIED STUFF: Show and Tell For Grown-Ups. It launched May 25. Here’s how Sharon describes it: “At storied-stuff.com, come discover the treasures that others hold dear—and … [Read more...]

Some summer diversions

Hey there – happy summer! I am happy to start the season with a cover shot. My photo “Petal Perfect” is the cover of the latest Olentangy Review. Thanks so much to Melissa and Darryl Price for choosing my work. Here’s some stuff I found interesting these past weeks. For Mockingbird, June 2, Sarah Condon wrote “Self-Righteousness at Home in the Twenty-First Century” and it has stayed on my mind. The subject matter is pertinent (“Because self-righteousness cuts a clear … [Read more...]

Happy Belated Birthday to Solace in So Many Words, which was launched into this world six years ago at Women and Children First Bookstore. I’ve been thinking about Solace in So Many Words and my writing lately because I can do little else since my back has been acting up and I can’t sit at my desk (which is why this post will be short). I continue to be proud of the contributors to Solace in So Many Words and their accomplishments. Just this week it was announced that … [Read more...]

First news of the year –accomplishments and passages

01/07/2017 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

January is peppermint. Candy canes are the last of the holiday candy. Shadows stripe the days. And the arctic air makes your breath seem almost mentholated. Everything's a little sharper. It is wonderful to see Solace in So Many Words contributors do illustrious things. BIG congrats to Ellen Bass, who recently was elected to the Academy of American Poets Board of Chancellors. BTW, if you resolve to read more poetry this year, check out the Poem-A-Day series. And … [Read more...]

Hunger by Laura Rodley

11/01/2016 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Hunger Does the maple leaf hunger for the sun, shaking hands with its light, the light that turns the maples’ leaves to rusty orange, heavy with color, so heavy they drop? Does the cardinal hunger for its mate, how they are never more than twenty feet away from each other, the wind of their flight, attaining bird seeds or shelter, so close they thrive? Do the deer hunger for acorns, remembering the buttery taste of those already eaten, or do they step … [Read more...]
