News and Mother’s Day poem by Lesléa Newman

Hey there! Happy Mother's Day. One bit of news I heard this week is that Glimmer Train is coming to its final destination – here’s what appeared in a recent email: “Most of you already know that next fall Glimmer Train will—after almost 30 years—finally arrive at the end of the line: The last Writers Ask, #85, will be out in October 2019, and Glimmer Train #106, the fall issue, will also be out in October (a little later than the usual August) so we have time to tuck every … [Read more...]

Sexualities, drinks, and an off-putting phrase

Good day to you! Hope things are looking up and that this May day finds you peaceful and happy. All is okay with me. We had a bad storm here the other night but weathered it. The forsythias are in bloom. I’ve heard about two calls for submissions you may want to know about. SISMW contributor Patti Wahlberg emailed to say Duende, the online literary journal produced by the students in the BFA-Writing program at Goddard College, has opened for submissions for its next … [Read more...]

Meditate on the positive

Greetings. It looks as if Spring may come to Chicago after all. How’s the weather by you? This weekend came and went. I saw the aftermath of a fatal highway crash on Friday. I went to the funeral of a young father on Saturday. I thought about my own father who was born on April 22, which was Sunday, which was also Earth Day. One of the readings from that funeral was from Philippians 4:4-9 (Final Exhortations). I don’t usually share scripture, but the last two verses … [Read more...]

Facebook & new books (and poetry & taxes)

Happy (almost) Tax Deadline Day! Hope you have your return prepared and that you are receiving a refund. Also hope you did not wake to snow as we did in Chicago. It’s odd certainly to get snow in mid-April and odder still to hear that baseball games are cancelled because of snow. Facebook has been in the news.  I have used this spot previously to discuss my qualms about social media. Sometimes, more often than it used to be, I am tempted to quit Facebook etc. But in … [Read more...]

Glimpse of solace: Tooting one’s horn

04/10/2018 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Don't forget Laura Rodley has two new books of poetry. If you are in Turner Falls, MA, Laura is having a double-duty reading there on April 15 at the Gill Montague Senior Center at 1:oo pm. Also, toot-toot, if you're from around here, I'll be reading tonight at seven at Evanston Art Center with Jorge Sanchez as part of the SalonSeries.  I am excited because I have not read in a while -- toot-toot, I'll be like the Little Engine That Could.  Thanks again to Beth … [Read more...]
