Great lord of all things, yet a prey to all

05/07/2021 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

The other day I was on Twitter and was struck by a tweet contrasting the fact that we have a robot helicopter on Mars while on Earth some people are trying to convince children to remove their masks during a pandemic. He linked to the first stanza of Alexander Pope’s  "An Essay on Man Epistle 11," which I provide below (thanks to the Poetry Foundation). I won’t pretend that I’ve read the entire work by Alexander Pope, which was written in 1773-1774, and which was … [Read more...]

Van Gogh solace

05/01/2021 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Tuesday was a beautiful day in Chicago, which was restorative and lovely. Also lovely and restorative is the Immersive Van Gogh at Chicago’s Germania Club. It is the first cultural event I have gone to since the pandemic started. In some ways, it was not business as usual; temperatures were scanned, everyone was masked, and circles were marked on the floor to show us where to stand six feet apart. But in some ways it felt like a welcome return to normal. Maybe the event … [Read more...]

I’m not much in the mood for jokes this April Fool’s Day. How about you? Today is also the beginning of National Poetry Month. I hope to share some poems later this month. In the meantime you can check out the Academy of American Poets to see ways you can celebrate poetry. It was back in early February when Massachusetts poet and journalist Laura Rodley sent me some photos. The one that spoke to me then is the one featured below (Tiny Little Houses in Gypsum, Colorado, … [Read more...]

Happy 2020: clear vision and vague intentions

12/31/2019 By Ellen Beals 2 Comments

It’s the last blog of the year so it feels like it should be important. But it isn’t. Sorry. No big news to report. No ambitious resolutions to tell you about. As my friend Tena Russ posted on FB, “I don’t have resolutions. I have vague intentions.” I did have a poem published in December; if you want to check it out, visit Dodging the Rain and read "When I said I love you." Disclaimer: it isn't very jolly. 2020. I guess if anything, I will take the year literally and … [Read more...]

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit

Happy July!  Hope it is lucky for you. And, happy 4th of July. Hope you have some fun. And to my fellow Moon Children, HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Here's a poem I wrote twenty years ago, but I still like it. Peace, love, and solace     July begins The day before I turn 41 I brood, wash dishes, think how my husband and sons have taken no time to shop, how I hadn’t seen my boys scurry away with crayons and paper to make--all I asked for--a heartfelt … [Read more...]
