Spring cleaning? Here’s where to donate books

03/23/2017 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Hey there Chicagoland book lovers. Is it time to make more room on your shelves? Consider donating your old books to Open Books. They have collection centers in various locations and will also come to collect your books, if you make arrangements. Open Books has two used book stores, one is in the West Loop and the other is in Pilsen. The profits from selling used books are then used to fund writing and reading programs for Chicago kids. We had snow here last week and … [Read more...]

03/15/2016 By Ellen Beals

Howdy! Hope you visited your polling place or have plans to do so today. How lucky we are to live in a country where we have a vote--don't let it go to waste. This weekend I learned about two great literary things in Chicago. The first is Open Books, which has West Loop and Pilsen locations. The organization collects and then re-sells used books in its bookstores to fund the various writing programs and workshops it hosts for Chicago youth. Are you spring cleaning? … [Read more...]

Three fairs and a freebie

10/24/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Hello Folks. Have you, like me, been wowed by the fall colors this year? I don't know whether the foliage is more exceptional this year than in previous ones. It seems to me it is. But then I also wonder whether it's me that's changed, gotten older and more sentimental, and more aware of the fleeting colors and birdsong and our remarkable natural world. Anyway, I've been trying to write some difficult pages and I'm easily distracted by the beauty outside my window (Glimpse of … [Read more...]
