Glimpse of Solace: Kathy Buckland

02/25/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

I couldn't finish the winter without posting these terrific photos by Kathleen Buckland. Next week I might need to post something more springlike but for today I just want to focus on these fantastic shots. As you can see, Kathy has been visiting the Lake Michigan shoreline. This winter she braved the low temps and snow to visit Lake Forest Beach as well as Tower Beach. I think the rocks in the second picture look almost like sea lions. Kathleen Buckland is a Glenview … [Read more...]

Poetry news: celebrities, critics, and “Chicago” by Carl Sandburg

02/25/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Celebrities have been making news in the poetry world. The actress Kristen Stewart (who played Bella Swan in The Twilight movies) shared one of her poems (“My Heart Is A Wiffle Ball/Freedom Pole”) with readers of Marie Claire. Critics, especially entertainment writers, pounced on it. Jenn Selby writing in The Independent called it “the worst poem of all time.”  Facebook and Twitter blew up with snark.  I did see one positive use for the poem; Chicago writer Kathleen Rooney … [Read more...]

Blog Tour stops here

02/17/2014 By Ellen Beals 2 Comments

Susan Perry who has a great blog on creativity (Creating in Flow) at the Psychology Today site asked me to participate in a Blog Tour.  It’s a way to introduce you to my writing process and two or three other creative people (I feature two). The Blog Tour asks that I answer four questions about my writing process.  And I will, but let me tell you a little more about Susan Perry. She has a novel, Kylie’s Heel, and a website so be sure to visit them also. Now to the … [Read more...]

Glimpse of Solace: Kathy Buckland, Kevin Nance

02/17/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

American Beauty © Kevin Nance, 2014 This post features work by two talented photographers. Kathy's photos are recent, taken of Lake Michigan a few weeks ago. I thought it was neat to juxtapose them with Kevin's rose. After all, the rose seems to me to be a February flower. So, if you didn't receive any roses on Valentine's Day, here's a late one. Hope you feel the love. Kathy Buckland is an avid photographer and nature enthusiast. She lives in Glenview, IL, … [Read more...]
