09/19/2013 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Happy to report Solace in So Many Words will be at two upcoming events. Creature comfort: McKnight, Buckland, O’Brien

I am by no means a naturalist. I can't name all the plants and animals I come across. But when I am feeling blah, I can look to nature and recapture that sense of wonder.  Maybe you can too. For example, how cool was it that writer Ellen McKnight looked up from her computer to see a foxy visitor? It's no secret I have a thing for deer (my poem "Deerstruck" originally appeared on The Poetry Mill blogsite and I am re-publishing it on this site) so I loved the photos of them … [Read more...]

Slice of solace: Deerstruck

Deerstruck Lately I’ve been seeking out deer going to the forest preserves at dusk, driving slowly down Lagoon Drive, always on the lookout   Do deer have any other expression besides startled?  Does a deer, like a dog, smile with its tail? Joyful flicker, bunny-hop, pom-pom trick. It cavorts away. No wonder it’s called a hind   Which animals are most Buddhist? Is the deer serene in manic alertness or is it a sloth who … [Read more...]

Somehow it's September.  Are you like me and wondering where the summer went? Well, at least I still have a vacation attitude in that I remain indolent and easily distracted. Contributors to Solace in So Many Words have been busy. I want to remind you again that Jan Bottiglieri's new chapbook "Where Gravity Pools the  Sugar" is out from Finishing Line Press. Daniel Chacón has revamped his website. His next book," is a hybrid of flash-stories and loops in text and … [Read more...]

I Google my name

I Google my name and come up with yours--the exact reverse. I think what if we went to school together, what confusion there’d be at roll call. Ellen, Wade. Wade, Ellen.   But you’re older, a ‘51 baby, a country boy from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. And you’re dead, killed in action in 1972, when the chopper you’re co-piloting on a rescue mission is hit by enemy fire and crashes into a small island on the Dak Poko … [Read more...]
