Sharon Fiffer “Losing and Finding”

07/21/2014 By Ellen Beals 1 Comment

Losing and Finding Someone close to me suffered a loss. A real one. It’s something that, without question, will impact her life forever. What do we do when that happens to people we love? We offer our company, maybe some food, a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, an open heart. We also share their rage and sense of injustice. Life didn’t keep its promise! We, too, raise our fists and shout and cry. We also offer platitudes, easy phrases that someone might have … [Read more...]

Thomas G. Fiffer: Finding my resolve

06/19/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Finding my resolve “Life changes in the instant. The ordinary instant.” – Joan Didion When I first learned I was infertile in the spring of 1996, I thought I could handle it. After all, I had been through tragedy before and come out whole. Tragedy was no stranger to my family. When I was two, my oldest brother had been partially paralyzed in a high-school wrestling accident. Later, he went  to Yale and the University of Chicago Law School, onto a successful career and … [Read more...]

I Believe in a Mother’s Love A tribute to Helen and Catherine I believe in a Mother’s love. I believe in her strong bond with the gentleness of a dove. Of my Mother’s tenderness I am so fond.   I believe there is no understanding like a Mother’s that can anywhere be found, Or a voice with a kinder, sweeter sound.   I believe in my Mother’s strength, that’s what helps me get through those tough days. I believe she is … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Laura Rodley “Seed Catalogs”

03/25/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Seed Catalogs Almost time to plant inside, tiny plants emerging from peat pots, thirsting for sun’s slant to stout their sprout, break open their small hearts to bless us with heavenly scents, off charts. Tall sunflowers grow, to hold on their heads caps of snow next year, keep hungry birds fed. Brownbagging for winter, start indoor seeds now, squash, parsnips, tomatoes, feed hungry cows with corn spread later when soil’s just warm, plant garlic … [Read more...]

Thomas Fiffer: Clear the cache and stop the recrimination

02/12/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Clear the cache and stop the recrimination This morning, after staying up extremely late writing, I heard the words "straight from the conscience" and "stop the recrimination." I don't hear voices, but I take the words that float into my head seriously. And when my conscience speaks, I listen. As I tried to divine what these phrases might mean, I also heard "clear the cache." I had cleared the cache on my laptop last night after Blogger started acting wonky. For … [Read more...]
