I am not a business person, or at least I wasn't until I started Weighed Words. So it's kind of funny that I wanted to come up with a model for publishing that was different than the ones I was used to. Lit mags don't usually pay unless you win a contest. Anthologies by fledgling presses don't usually pay either. For small-time writers like me, payment came in the form of comp copies and the glory of publication. In preparing for our event in Long Beach, I suggested each of the poets read another poem from Solace in So Many Words in addition to their own. Donna Hilbert told me she wanted to read "Portuguese Sweet Bread," for two reasons. I think I first met Carol Kanter ("Her Best Medicine," "Alternative Eulogy" and "The Advanced Course") in the back of Books on Vernon when we both signed on for a poetry-writing class with Larry Starzec; he is a former businessman who came to poetry as a second career, studied at one of those low-residency programs and now teaches at Lake County College.
