Let it linger

01/14/2014 By Ellen Beals 1 Comment

Sure it's January 14 and the holidays are behind us and we're back to business in the new year. Well, I've decided to look again  at some of my favorite things from the past month or so, to relish them. First up are prints done by Steve Shanabruch.  From The Chicagoist I found out about his Chicago neighborhood project in which he gives a neighborhood a unique logo and makes a WPA-inspired print for it. At the time the article came out, only the South Loop, Beverly and … [Read more...]

But as far the occupation of creative writing, the finding that it is so competitive is no-duh. I do know that of all the creative writers, it is poets … [Read more...]

Slice of Solace: Pico Iyer

10/12/2013 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

"Occasionally, it's true, I'll meet someone--call him myself--who makes the same mistake again and again, heedless of what friends and sense tell him, unable even to listen to himself. Then he crashes his car, or suffers a heart attack, and suddenly calamity works on him like an alarm clock; by packing a punch that no gentler means can summon, suffering breaks him open and moves him to change his ways." by Pico Iyer from "The Value of Suffering," which appeared in The New … [Read more...]

Natural solace

07/21/2013 By Ellen Beals 2 Comments

I am not a dedicated gardener, but I like to have flowers in the yard. At the end of May I went to a local garden shop and bought a bunch of things to plant in window boxes and containers. A nice young woman helped me select the flowers. I wanted some hanging plants but something different than potato vine or ivy. So she suggested these and I went along with the idea, probably not paying too much attention to her description other than it was a full-sun plant and drought … [Read more...]
