When and what to declare

07/08/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

The Fourth of July made me think about our nation’s Declaration of Independence, a declaration made while the Colonies were already at war, a war they fought for some six years longer. Our founders declared independence and then worked to make it happen. I thought I would write a post on how we all declare our patriotism on the Fourth. It comes as easy as wearing red, white and blue or waving the flag.  Politicians especially want to be thought patriotic. But how can we … [Read more...]

Words don’t fail me

05/28/2014 By Ellen Beals 1 Comment

Hiya. It's been 16 days since I last posted. Wish I could say there was a reason but . . . maybe there have been a couple, the first being that I have been unmotivated. Sometimes I feel like I am drowning in blather. FB, Twitter, email all bring me information that proves to be superfluous and sometimes distracting. Kim and Kanye share space with the 200 kidnapped girls in Nigeria. Lately everything seems noisy to me. So I feel disinclined to add to the chatter, especially … [Read more...]

Glimpse of Solace: Kathy Buckland

02/25/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

I couldn't finish the winter without posting these terrific photos by Kathleen Buckland. Next week I might need to post something more springlike but for today I just want to focus on these fantastic shots. As you can see, Kathy has been visiting the Lake Michigan shoreline. This winter she braved the low temps and snow to visit Lake Forest Beach as well as Tower Beach. I think the rocks in the second picture look almost like sea lions. Kathleen Buckland is a Glenview … [Read more...]

Poetry news: celebrities, critics, and “Chicago” by Carl Sandburg

02/25/2014 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Celebrities have been making news in the poetry world. The actress Kristen Stewart (who played Bella Swan in The Twilight movies) shared one of her poems (“My Heart Is A Wiffle Ball/Freedom Pole”) with readers of Marie Claire. Critics, especially entertainment writers, pounced on it. Jenn Selby writing in The Independent called it “the worst poem of all time.”  Facebook and Twitter blew up with snark.  I did see one positive use for the poem; Chicago writer Kathleen Rooney … [Read more...]
