07/31/2015 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Hey there. It's a beautiful Friday night. It's Lolla time in Chicago. I found M. C. Escher on my bathroom floor. Trippy. Tonight there's supposed to be a Blue Moon -- so look up! Have a great weekend.   … [Read more...]

Glimpse of solace: photography experiments

07/23/2015 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

July is flying by.  Hope you are busy and having fun.. Also hope you have time to play. Today and yesterday were the best days of summer here so far -- skies were blue for a change. I was out on the deck fooling around with my camera (and a kaleidoscope) and reading T. C. Boyle's latest book (The Harder They Come).  Anyway, here's what I came up with. … [Read more...]

Words don’t fail me

05/28/2014 By Ellen Beals 1 Comment

Hiya. It's been 16 days since I last posted. Wish I could say there was a reason but . . . maybe there have been a couple, the first being that I have been unmotivated. Sometimes I feel like I am drowning in blather. FB, Twitter, email all bring me information that proves to be superfluous and sometimes distracting. Kim and Kanye share space with the 200 kidnapped girls in Nigeria. Lately everything seems noisy to me. So I feel disinclined to add to the chatter, especially … [Read more...]

April 1: Fourteen Ways of Looking at a Daffodil

04/01/2014 By Ellen Beals 1 Comment

It's April Fools Day (so beware) and it's the first day of Poetry Month. To commemorate the two, I have mashed up two well-known poems (William Wordworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" and Wallace Steven's "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird) with some of my own words to create a daffy poem. Fourteen Ways of Looking at a Daffodil I After the gray snow melts, The only moving thing: A host of daffodils.   II I was of two minds, Wandering … [Read more...]

Vegas and bust — “So we die”

03/15/2014 By Ellen Beals 2 Comments

I've been remiss on my blog duties because I've been busy losing money. Here are my pics from Vegas; I didn't take many and I only used my I-phone.         These pics tell my latest story. Well, actually no, it is isn't my latest. While I was away, my short story "So we die" came out in the latest issue (#11) of Cobalt. Here's the link to the website. Then click on issue … [Read more...]
