Carol Kanter “Girl with Green Balloon”

10/02/2012 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Girl with Green Balloon Shades of Vermeer, the beauty of this young maid. Though, alas, her adornment seems to lack gemstone preciousness.   Never mind.   She treasures it saves it from jostling by festival crowds as she would have it shield her from portraiture.   She loves its green--just shy of emerald-- that grants her a glimpse of fabled seas so far off they stretch belief.   Sunlight winks from its … [Read more...]

More September news: Adamkiewicz, Calderwood, Kirk, Bass, Swist (and me)

09/20/2012 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

We had a mild winter and early spring and summer so I guess that is why fall seems to be coming a little early too.  We've been treated to some gorgeous days. Since my last blog, I've heard from Constance Vogel Adamkiewicz to tell me her poems "Drought" and "Stone" were published on Little Eagle's RE/VERSE website. "Drought" was published September 11, 2012.  "Stone" was published February 20, 2012. "Drought" is ominous: "Someday from the lemur-eyes of gas masks,/ we … [Read more...]

Somehow it’s September. What’s new with Solace contributors?

09/06/2012 By Ellen Beals 1 Comment

I gotta lotta reasons for not writing the blog recently. Summer is ending. A household project is starting. The conventions are on. But you know the real reason is that sometimes I am just lazy. But contributors to Solace in So Many Words haven't been lazy. T. C. Boyle has a story "Birnam Wood" in The New Yorker (September 2, 2012 issue). Joe Meno is interviewed in TriQuarterly (June 17, 2012). Philip Levine has a poem "How to Get There" in February issue of Poetry, and … [Read more...]

Authors’ Showcase at Printers Row Lit Fest

07/25/2012 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Weighed Words was interviewed at Printers Row Lit Fest. I was the fourth publisher interviewed (and it is pretty apparent that I am new at this). Authors Showcase is a 30-minute cable TV show that promotes new authors and books.  It runs Thursday at 8pm on Chicago Cable Channel 25 or watch all the programs online whenever you want. As Authors Showcase explains, "Our goal is to introduce you to as many new books and authors as we can in thirty minutes. We understand this … [Read more...]
