News on contributors (Desilets, Rodley, Mahan, McConnell, Kirk) notes on rejection

02/11/2015 By Ellen Beals 2 Comments

Hello sweeties. Hope you don't have the winter blues and that you are getting enough vitamin D. On January 16 there was a story on NPR by Jason Comely about embracing rejection ("By Making a Game out of Rejection, A Man Conquers Fear"). For a while there I was going to write a post about it, how writers have to embrace rejection.  I was trying to think of it in terms of the Pareto principle, the mathematical principle known as the 80-20 rule, but I couldn’t get it … [Read more...]

Death of a legend, contributor news, new call for submissions

01/28/2015 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

Hey there sports fans.  If you are into baseball, I‘ve got to think you’re mourning the death of the great Ernie Banks, #14. His face as a rookie ballplayer, which graced the front pages of the papers in Chicago, is something to behold: there’s a purity there not seen often. It shines through. Beautiful. It struck me because Sunday’s Chicago Tribune covered the death of Chicago’s hometown legend in the front pages and back in the sports pages too while the arts section … [Read more...]

News of contributors: Poniewaz, Somlo, Hilbert, Miller, Levine, Subprimal and Nelson Algren contest

I was sorry to read at various sources that Jeff Poniewaz recently passed away. He was currently serving as Milwaukee’s Poet Laureate. Known as an eco-poet Jeff taught Literature of Ecological Vision via the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 1989. His book Dolphin Leaping in the Milky Way was awarded the Discovery Award from PEN in 1987. Submission letters and his bio always came with this note: “His last name is pronounced POE-nYEAH-vAHsh and is Polish for … [Read more...]

Supposedly it’s spring. Last night we had a dusting of snow and today the temps are in the 20s.  Most of the mounds of snow that accumulated over the winter are gone except for the waning piles that remain in the shady spots.  I’ve seen robins and blue jays and all kinds of birds in the yard. Today’s photos in Glimpse of Solace are from a new contributor,  Lisa Comperry. Today's Guest Post is a poem ("Seed Catalogs") by Laura Rodley. BTW, did you read Laura's poem for … [Read more...]

Blog Tour stops here

02/17/2014 By Ellen Beals 2 Comments

Susan Perry who has a great blog on creativity (Creating in Flow) at the Psychology Today site asked me to participate in a Blog Tour.  It’s a way to introduce you to my writing process and two or three other creative people (I feature two). The Blog Tour asks that I answer four questions about my writing process.  And I will, but let me tell you a little more about Susan Perry. She has a novel, Kylie’s Heel, and a website so be sure to visit them also. Now to the … [Read more...]
